Cal downs WSU in Pac-10 baseball

California scored four runs in a decisive eighth inning to earn a 7-4 Pacific-10 Conference baseball victory Friday night over Washington State in Pullman.

Jayson Miller pitched 62/3 innings for the Cougars (13-7, 0-2) and yielded three runs on seven hits. Andrew Davis got the loss..

Trailing 4-3 entering the eighth, Blake Smith hit a two-run home run to ignite a four-run inning for the Golden Bears (15-3-1, 2-0).

Daniel Wolford earned the win for the Golden Bears with 22/3 innings of relief. Wolford struck out five, walked one and scattered three hits.

Matt Gorgen needed only 11 pitches to earn his third save for California.

•Marcus McKimmy hit a three-run home run in the first inning and scored on a fielding error in the eighth to give Gonzaga a 4-3 non-conference win on the road over Sacramento State.

Brandon Harmon pitched seven strong innings for the Bulldogs (13-8). Harmon gave up two runs on five hits and struck out two batters in earning the win. Cody Martin earned his third save.

Sacramento State (5-12) closed the gap to 3-2 with one run each in the third and fourth innings.

Grant Kveder reached base three times for Gonzaga with two hits and a walk.

•Whitworth pounded out 21 combined hits in 5-3 and 11-3 victories in a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Lewis & Clark in Portland.

Chad Flett pitched a complete game and recorded six strikeouts in the first game for the Pirates (7-13, 6-8). In the second game, Jon Whiteside went 3 for 4, including a three-run triple in the second inning.

Neal Finch had two hits and plated three runs for Lewis & Clark (4-14, 2-12) in the first game. .

Wrestling

Sandpoint graduate Jared Rosholt of Oklahoma State beat Matt Fields (Iowa) and lost to top-ranked Dustin Fox (Northwestern) in the 285-pound weight class at the NCAA wrestling championships in St. Louis. He must defeat David Zabriske of Iowa State and either Ed Prendergast (Navy) or Fields to earn third place in the weight class.

Three Boise State wrestlers were eliminated from the tournament. Cory Fish (University High) won twice at 133 pounds before losing to Joe Baker of Navy. Levi Jones (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) at 141 was pinned in his first match of the day by Northern Illinois’ Patrick McLemore and Adam Hall (Bonners Ferry) at 149 was ousted by third-ranked J.P. O’Connor of Harvard.

Another Sandpoint graduate, Luke Feist of Stanford was pinned by Alex Dolly (Northern Iowa) at 174 and eliminated.

Iowa has clinched its first team title since 2000 with a day still remaining in the tournament.

Softball

CC Spokane (6-8, 0-2) was swept 5-3 and 6-3 in an NWAACC doubleheader at Wenatchee Valley.

Theresa Tveit (University High) was 4 of 7 with three RBIs on the day.

Track

Washington State’s Phil MacArthur won the men’s hammer with a throw of 196 feet, 9 inches at the USC Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles.

McKenzie Garberg finished third in the women’s hammer with a throw of 192-6.

•Alexander Hymel of Whitworth won the men’s javelin with a throw of 178-10 at the Charles Bowles Spring Break Classic meet at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

Women’s basketball

Lewis-Clark State advanced to the NAIA Division I championship quarterfinals with a 73-61 win over Lindsey Wilson College in Jackson, Tenn.

Sadie Short led the Warriors (29-4) with 19 points.
