Pitt’s on the way

Pittsburgh had just scored its biggest win in women’s basketball and guard Shavonte Zellous leaped on the back of big teammate Marcedes Walker at midcourt.

In the game, it was Zellous who carried the Panthers (24-10) into the Spokane Regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament Monday night in Albuquerque, N.M.

The former track sprinter turned shooting guard scored 19 points and grabbed a key late rebound to lead the Panthers to a 67-59 win over No. 3 seed and former national champion Baylor (25-7).

Pitt is in a regional semifinal for the first time in school history.

Vanderbilt 64, West Virginia 46: At Albuquerque, N.M., Christina Wirth scored 21 points and reserve Jessica Mooney added 11 points to help the Commodores (25-8) beat the Mountaineers (25-8).

Olayinka Sanni led West Virginia with 14 points while Meg Bulger scored 13 and LaQuita Owens had 10.

Stanford 88, UTEP 54: At Stanford, Calif., Candice Wiggins scored a school-record tying 44 points in her last game at Maples Pavilion, leading the Cardinal (32-3) past the Miners (28-4).

It was the third most points scored in women’s tournament history and the most since Sheryl Swoopes had 47 in the 1993 championship game for Texas Tech.

Lorri Bauman of Drake has the all-time record of 50, set in 1982 against Maryland.

New Orleans Regional

LSU 68, Marist 49: At Baton Rouge, Lady Tigers center Sylvia Fowles had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and guard Erica White had 15 points to help LSU (29-5) beat Marist (32-3), ending the Red Foxes’ 22-game winning streak.

Fowles became the leading rebounder in the history of the Southeastern Conference with 1,527.

Oklahoma State 73, Florida State 72 (OT): At Des Moines, Iowa, Andrea Riley sank a free throw with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Cowgirls (27-7) a victory over the Seminoles (19-14).

Danielle Green led Oklahoma State with 23 points and Riley scored 21.

Greensboro Regional

Rutgers 69, Iowa State 58: At Des Moines, Iowa, Kia Vaughn scored 23 points to lead four players in double figures and the Scarlet Knights (26-6) beat the Cyclones (21-13).

Epiphanny Prince scored 17 points, Matee Ajavon had 16 and Essence Carson added 10 for Rutgers.

George Washington 55, California 53: At Stanford, Calif., Sarah-Jo Lawrence rebounded a missed shot by Kimberly Beck and beat the buzzer with a shot from the baseline to give the Colonials (27-6) a victory over the Golden Bears (27-7).

The winning shot was set up when Natasha Vital traveled while trying to call timeout for Cal with less than 6 seconds remaining.

Oklahoma City Regional

Texas A&M 63, Hartford 39: At Baton Rouge, La., Danielle Gant scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting to lead the Aggies (28-7) to a dominant victory over the Hawks (28-6).

Hartford shot 34 percent and turned the ball over 25 times.
