UC Davis dumps Gonzaga

Hot off the momentum of a four-game win streak, the Gonzaga Bulldogs (15-9) were not able to make it to five Monday, dropping an 8-2 decision to the host UC Davis (13-7) Aggies at Dobbins Stadium in the first Division I baseball game between the two schools.

Bulldogs starter AJ Proszek (1-1) suffered the loss and allowed five earned runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Aggies reliever Jeremy McChesney (1-0) earned the victory. He worked four solid innings, allowing one hit and no runs.

“ Gonzaga’s Marcus McKimmy was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week. The senior second baseman from Yakima went 14 for 31 last week with four doubles, a home run and 14 RBIs. McKimmy transferred from San Jose State University last year.

Softball

Whitworth posted a convincing 10-3 win over La Sierra but fell in eight innings, 4-3, to Wellesley on the Pirates’ first day of competition at the SunWest Tournament at Chapman (Calif.) University.

Jessica Mangis pitched Whitworth to victory over La Sierra, working six innings and allowing no earned runs. Whitworth scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings to help Mangis notch her second win of the season.

In the second game, Whitworth lost an early 3-0 lead and Wellesley won in the extra frame on a fielder’s choice. Wellesley’s Kelsey Ayers pitched seven innings, allowed three runs on six hits and had seven strikeouts. Kerr was 2 for 4 for the Pirates with an RBI and a run scored.
