Cheney percussionists win state title
The Cheney High School Percussion Ensemble won the 2008 state title for large group percussion at the 2008 State Percussion Ensemble Championships.
The ensemble is formed by Amelia Langebartel, Vinny Nickoloff, April Chase, Matt Cooper, Matt Piper, Josh Wisswell, Alex Gustafson, Marye Fuqua, Laren McKinley and band director Mike Suhling.
The group placed above 22 other schools.
Superintendent search
The Cheney Public Schools Board of Directors is holding an executive session today in the boardroom of the Fisher Administration Building, 520 Fourth St., Cheney.
The purpose of the closed meeting is to evaluate the qualifications of an applicant for employment.
The board will also hold a special board meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m., also in the Fisher building, to select its new superintendent to replace Michael Dunn.
Cultural Night
Evergreen Elementary School, 215 W. Eddy, will host its Cultural Night today from 6 to 8 p.m.
The evening will include classrooms with origami demonstrations, Native American storytelling with drums, Chinese writing and pot sticker samples, Highland dancing and artifacts from Ethiopia and Russia.
There will also be activities in the school gymnasium and multipurpose room.
The events in the gym will feature Native American dancers at 6 p.m., tae kwan do demonstrations at 6:30 p.m., the Whitworth Hawaiian Dancers at 7 p.m. and side-step jump rope at 7:30.
In the multipurpose room there will be the Kuumba Drum Ensemble at 6 p.m., the Covenant Marimba Band at 6:30 p.m., the Spokane Community Choir at 7 p.m. and representatives from the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute at 7:30 p.m.

Lewis and Clark speaker
Jane Nelson, author of the “Positive Discipline” book series, will speak at Lewis and Clark High School, 521 W. Fourth Ave., at 6 p.m. today to educators, teachers and parents.
Nelson is a marriage, family and child counselor and will discuss nonpunitive strategies to help children develop self-discipline and more.
