Fee talks under way at Rec Center

CHENEY – The public may be able to use Eastern Washington University’s new $26.3 million Recreation Center once a new fee structure is ironed out. The center’s grand opening is set for next Thursday.

The facility’s governing board was set to meet today to discuss fees for the public. Dave Meany, EWU media relations specialist, said the proposed fees are $5 a day a person; $35 a month a person; $65 a month for families, or an annual fee of $380 a person. The 107,000-square-foot Rec Center features a fitness facility, an indoor running track, a gymnasium, an ice rink, a climbing wall, covered parking and a dining area.

Cheney residents have always been charged a fee for use of the Body Shop and other facilities on campus. EWU employees will be charged $10 less a month than the general public.

“Everyone will have an opportunity to utilize the facilities,” said Evan Buelt, president of the Associated Students of Eastern Washington University. “I’m pleased it’s finally done.”

The EWU student body voted to pay a $65 activity fee each quarter to use the Rec Center, and the university will pay its operating costs. The Body Shop, which was at the PHASE, will also be moved to the Rec Center.

Meany said the Rec Center will help recruit students and keep employees. The center will be the hub for health-related activities.
