Soccer, baseball, golf … take your postseason pick
Postseason is upon us.
•Soccer – Central Valley either qualified for state on Friday when it played Mead for the District 8 4A high school championship, or will play Friday’s University-Ferris winner on Tuesday at Albi Stadium for the opportunity to do so.
Top 3A seed East Valley plays Hanford today, 1 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep in the first round of the eight-team 3A regional competition with teams from the Columbia Basin League. If the Knights win they play again Wednesday. Three teams qualify for state.
West Valley, first in the North Division of the Great Northern League, plays south champion Cheney today, 10 a.m. at Central Valley for seeding into next week’s district tournament that sends three teams to 2A state.
•Baseball – University (17-2 prior to Friday’s season-ending game at North Central) secured its first Greater Spokane League championship since 1995 with a 2-1 win over the Indians on Thursday. Along with Central Valley, the Titans play in next week’s district tournament. The Bears (10-9) play Gonzaga Prep in loser-out competition on Wednesday, the Titans host a game on Friday.
East Valley (4-15) upset CV 5-4 on Thursday. The two completed the regular season Friday. The Knights travel Tuesday in loser-out regional competition against the CBL.
West Valley (13-4, 10-2) needed one win Friday against Colville to lock up first place in the GNL and top seed in the district tournament that sends three teams to state. They’ll host Wednesday.
Northeast A League champion Freeman (16-1, 14-1) begins Bi-District competition Tuesday with two games in Colfax beginning against Caribou Trail League No. 4 Chelan.
•Softball – Greater Spokane League season ends on Monday with the possibility of a second-place tiebreaker between Central Valley and University to follow before the six-team district play begins on Thursday. University (14-4) lost 2-1 to Mt. Spokane on Tuesday and finishes at home against league champion Shadle Park. CV (13-5) is favored in its final two game with a chance to tie the Titans. First and second-place finishers automatically qualify for regional.
West Valley (11-6, 10-2) entered Friday’s doubleheader with GNL leader Colville in second place, but only a game ahead of Pullman. Six-team district competition for three state spots begins in a week.
Third-place Freeman plays in the NEA district tournament next Saturday that qualifies teams to the 1A regional tournament at Franklin Park in mid-May.
•Golf/tennis – Greater Spokane League 3A and 4A district competitions begin Monday. This weekend is the Inland Empire tennis tournament and district competition begins on Wednesday.
Women’s club golf
Liberty Lake 9 Hole – The challenge facing club golfers this week was that there were no putters allowed when they reached the greens. Linda Sahnow shot low gross 59 to win first flight. Nellie Auckerman shot 60 in second and Emma Long 65 in third. No handicap winner was Nancy Gaudette. Net leaders were Nancy Lampe with 41 in first, Darlene Reilly with 39 in second and Wilma Capaul with 42 in third.
Painted Hills 9 Hole – Monday marked beginning of the season for ladies club members. Sharon Meier in A flight and no-handicapper Linda Church both had 49s in their season debuts. Meier chipped in for a birdie on No. 10. B flight’s Kathy Walker and C flight’s Bette Devine each shot 57. Carol Chevalier had 62 in D and had fewest putts with 14. Net winners were Kathy Perry in A with 36, Betty Snow in B with 38, Vivian Zagelow in C with 37 and Eleanor Badinger in D with 40.
Trail at Liberty Lake – Wednesday Ladies Day play included a pair of low gross 48 scores. Betty Grassl led A flight and Sandi Hatcher led B in sharing weekly honors. Marilyn Collins shot 62 in C flight and Jane Lutz was no-handicap winner. Net winners were Dee Elder with 35 in A flight, Shirley Rodman with 29 in B and Renee Begovich with 32 in C.
Liberty Lake 18 Hole – Club members chose their best nine holes and used half their handicap in determining Tuesday winners. Kathy Brown finished with 35 to win A flight. Carol Blume was a stroke back and Patsy Lynn finished with 36 ½. In B flight, Chrissie Tamera won by half a stroke over Honey Conlon 37 to 37 ½. Louise Newtson had 34 ½ in C flight to Lee Sonderman‘s 37 ½. Myrna Neubauer won D with 44 to Idell Jenicek‘s 47.
