Bayview news: May signals start of summer’s activities

Herb Huseland The Spokesman-Review

The summer season starts to crank up with the advent of May, and with any sort of luck the snow is over for the year. Thoughts are being focused on gardens and lake activities, starting with this weekend in Bayview.

On Saturday night, the Captain’s Wheel will feature the ever-popular Bells, a three-generation band that has been mostly inactive this winter, as the twins, Emily and Nellie, both gave birth to yet another generation of this extremely musically talented family. Chuck and Norma Bell, founders of the band back in 1972, still sit in occasionally.

Sunday, Mother’s Day, finds all three restaurants honoring moms. The Buttonhook, which reopened for the season May 1, and the Captain’s Wheel will serve lunch and dinner, with Terry’s Cafe featuring breakfast and lunch. Buttonhook Inn will feature dinners and be open from 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and open at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. For the early season, they will be closed Monday through Wednesday.

American Legion Post 149 in Athol is starting up for the season, too, with a golf tournament Monday at Rimrock Golf course. Tee time is 9 a.m. and a $25 entry fee is required, which includes the awards dinner. The tournament is a modified scramble. Reservations must be made and fees paid by Friday. Memorial Day will feature ceremonies at Bayview, at 9 a.m. Also at the Legion is an appreciation dinner on May 17 for World War II and Korea vets, with the aforementioned vets eating for free. Others can join in for $7 each.

The same weekend will find the annuals revisiting Bayview, as they have done for years, the weekend prior to Memorial Day. Their annual invasion of Bayview has been going on for many years. A bunch of bachelors started the tradition somewhere around 24 or 25 years ago. For the usual reasons, none of the participants can remember how far back, and some whopartied a little too much just don’t remember even being in Bayview.

This is a friendly group, with a second generation joining up last year. Older now and married with adult kids, they leave the ladies at home for the occasion. We have yet to find out what the distaff side does during this time. Headquartered at Farragut State Park, they will be entertained at The Captain’s Wheel with music by Comfort Zone.
