Pinegrove Cemetery cleanup Saturday

The annual Pinegrove Cemetery cleanup is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. As in years past, the public is invited to lend a hand in beautifying Rathdrum’s historic cemetery. City Parks and Recreation Director Lance Bridges said “We are encouraging the public to come. We would like to see church groups, youth groups and families join us in cleaning up the cemetery.” The Rathdrum Lions Club will provide hot dogs and cold drinks for those who turn out to help. Bridges added a reminder, “Don’t forget to bring your gloves and maybe a rake if you come.” Call 687-2399 for more information.

In other cemetery news, Bridges said he is eager to get started on some upgrades to the cemetery recently made possible through changes in the way cemetery funds are handled. With a portion of the funds now available for maintenance and improvements, Bridges hopes to improve the visual appearance of the cemetery through an automatic water system and other upgrades. According to Bridges, “The Cemetery Commission and city staff will develop a master plan to make the much needed improvements.”

City doing some spring cleaning

The city of Rathdrum has decided to take on an ambitious spring cleanup project this year. The weeklong effort will begin on May 17, as volunteers help the disabled, elderly or others that require help, cleanup and pile their trash curbside for pickup by city crews the next week. They will help pile branches, yard waste and other trash.

The week of May 21 through 24, city residents can haul their trash, free of charge, to the Public Works yard at 7310 W. Boekel Road for disposal. Dumpsters will be available to those presenting a copy of their water bill from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Residents are welcome to drop off yard waste including leaves and branches and household trash including furniture and appliances at the dumpsters. Unacceptable materials include dirt and grass, commercial trash, tires, and hazardous materials such as paint and petroleum products.

Once city officials have helped residents, they are hoping a few volunteers will still be willing to help them clean the city’s highways and parks on the last day of their cleanup blitz, May 24. Volunteers for both the May 17 neighborhood cleanup, or the May 24 highways and parks cleanp should meet at the Public Works yard at 8 a.m.

The city is also offering to pick up old cars during the cleanup week. Titles must be available at time of pickup. To volunteer for any of these projects or to make arrangements for help with your cleanup efforts or for car pickup, call the city at 687-0261, ext. 16 or 24.
