Keep ticket books holstered

The Spokesman-Review

Members of the Spokane Police Guild would like your assistance in not reaching our directed citation quota.

Recently the administration ordered officers working the downtown day shift bicycle patrol to write “five to 10 jaywalking” or other associated pedestrian violations per shift.

We all know that jaywalking can be hazardous to the violator and at times violations need to be addressed through a citation; however, most of our affected members are inclined to use discretion when viewing these types of violations and, based on experience, would rather utilize their time addressing other criminal activity in the downtown area.

With the direct order from the administration, officers are left with no choice, other than violating a direct order, but to enforce the quota by issuing citations for “jaywalking” and similar pedestrian violations.

Please help us with this issue by following basic safety rules, as we cannot address violations that are not taking place.
