Meadow Ridge students advance to state Math is Cool

Teams from Meadow Ridge Elementary School recently qualified for the Math is Cool state competition May 17 at Mt. Spokane High School. The Meadow Ridge fourth-grade team placed third, and the fifth-grade and the sixth-grade teams each placed first in the regional competition. Their coach is Susy Brenaman. Students selected to represent Meadow Ridge on the state level teams, chosen by the four-highest scores from the regional competition, are:

•Fourth-grade team: Blake Moore, Nathan Brekke, Luke Shimanuki and Nicolle Hamm.

•Fifth-grade team: Matthew Littleton, Derek Ishii, Katie Kalhar and Megan Hervey.

•Sixth-grade team: Brian Shimanuki, Mason Ste. Marie, Sam Whitfield and Joel Wadsworth.

The regional competition included individual student tests, team multiple-choice tests, relays, mental math sessions and several College Bowl contests. At the end of the events all of the teams, including more than 600 students, parents, friends and coaches, from around the region met in the gym for the awards ceremony.
