Miller’s mound gem lifts Cougars over Huskies
Jayson Miller went the distance on the mound and Jim Murphy delivered at the plate to lead the Washington State Cougars to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Huskies on Saturday in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
Miller tied a career high with nine strikeouts and came within one strike of notching his first career shutout.
Murphy had an RBI double in the seventh to put WSU (27-21, 6-11) up 4-0. It was his 151st career RBI, giving him sole possession of seventh place on the Cougars’ all-time list.
Washington is 30-17 9-8.
•Bernard Pena drove in three runs and the Lewis-Clark State Warriors (50-5) rolled to a 15-4 win over the College of Idaho Coyotes in the title game of the NAIA Region I tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia.
LCSC advances to the Super Regional where they will host Region II champion Azusa Pacific in a best-of-3 series starting Wednesday.
LCSC third baseman Kyle Greene was named Region I player of the year, while Warriors coach Ed Cheff was named coach of the year.
•The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (18-23, 9-19) split a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader with the Treasure Valley Chukars (29-19, 17-11) in Ontario, Ore., with the Sasquatch winning the opener 8-4 before losing the nightcap 10-2.
Adam Smith (University HS) homered for the Sasquatch in the first game.
Track and field
Washington State senior Rickey Moody finished second in the men’s decathlon at the Pacific-10 Track and Field Championships in Tempe, Ariz.
Moody scored 7,395 points in the decathlon behind Oregon’s Ashton Eaton at 7,604. Moody had the top distance in the discus (134 feet, 1 inch) and javelin (185-0).
The remainder of the championships will be held in Tempe next weekend.
Arizona State’s Jacquelyn Johnson won the heptathlon with 6,307 points. WSU freshman Angela Jensen was 14th.
•Idaho Vandals pole vaulter Melinda Owen broke her own school record and set a Western Athletic Conference record at the Vandal Jamboree.
Owen cleared 14-51/4 inches, topping her school record of 13-71/4 set a week ago. She bettered the conference mark of 14-31/2 set by Melissa Price of Fresno State in 1998.
Owen’s height puts her in first place in the nation.
Idaho men’s pole vaulter Mike Carpenter bettered his own school record by a one-quarter inch when he cleared 17-1.
•The Eastern Washington Eagles had two men qualify for the Big Sky Conference championships with their efforts at the Vandal Jamboree.
John Clevenger qualified in the javelin when he finished first with a toss of 207-8.
Armon Blackwell qualified when he won the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.19.
•Community Colleges of Spokane’s Chanel James had a pair of second-place finishes Friday night at the Oregon Twilight meet in Eugene.
James had a 12.03-second showing in the women’s 100-meter dash and a 25.71 effort in the 200.
•University High School and University of Washington graduate Brad Walker won the men’s pole vault when he cleared 17-81/2 at the Osaka Grand Prix in Osaka, Japan.
