A two-out double steal in the bottom of the sixth inning produced the winning run as Northport overcame Odessa 9-8 Monday at University High School to earn the No. 1 seed from District 7 to regional play that begins Saturday. Odessa goes as No. 2.

When Odessa threw to second to try and put out Northport’s Casey Cox, who was stealing from first, winning pitcher Tucker Guglielmino, who was on third, raced home. A six-run fifth inning, highlighted by Jack Zornes’ three-run triple, got Northport (23-2) in the game after Odessa had opened a 6-1 lead.

Eathan Mannick had a two-run triple and Tanner Somday a two-run single in a four-run fourth inning that was instrumental in Curlew’s 10-9 win over Almira/Coulee-Hartline at U-Hi for District 7’s No. 3 berth to regional. ACH, which rallied from a 10-3 deficit with three runs in each the sixth and seventh innings, was eliminated.

Howard Lee was 3 for 3 and drove in four runs to lead St. George’s to a comeback 9-6 win over Lind-Ritzville at Whitworth in the championship game of the District 7 2B tournament. The Dragons will play DeSales at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shadle Park in regional play. As the No. 2 seed from the district, Lind-Ritzville plays Saturday in Walla Walla. … Northwest Christian earned the No. 3 seed with a 12-7 win over Reardan that eliminated the Indians. The Crusaders also play Saturday at Shadle. Taylor Hendrickson of NWC and Mike Matson of Reardan hit solo home runs. … In opening-round games, St. George’s beat NWC 19-2 in five innings as Jordan Dickson went 5 for 5 with three RBIs and four runs scored and Colin Barker drove in three runs. Lind-Ritzville beat Reardan, but no score was reported.

Golf

Aaron Byrd of Cheney and Brittany Ray of Colville claimed medalist honors to lead their schools to district titles as the Great Northern League District 2A tournament wound up at MeadowWood. The first round was last week at Chewelah. Byrd shot a 140, capped by a 4-under-par 68 at MeadowWood, to hold off Corey Meyers of Deer Park, whose closing 67 left him a shot back. Dillon Williams of Pullman finished third at 148 as the top 13 qualified for state. … Ray led the 13 girls state qualifiers with a 170, closing with an 11-over 83. Pullman’s Paige Whidbee (178) and Emily McCormick (182) finished second and third.

Jenni White of East Valley finished second by three strokes to lead three from the Greater Spokane League into the state tournament at the 3A regional in Kennewick. White shot a 187 to the 184 for medalist Jenna Boyle of West Valley-Yakima. The top 12 advance to state. Mt. Spokane’s Alyssa Osterback tied for sixth at 193 and teammate Hillary Suez was 12th at 205. WV-Yakima won the team title. EV was third, Mt. Spokane fourth.

Chris Williams of Moscow leads the Idaho State 4A boys championship by six strokes with a 69 in Jerome. Teammate Shaun Hill was third with a 76. Dan Sommerfield of Sandpoint shot 84. In the team event, that will be decided today, Moscow trails Pocatello 326-327. Individual titles, except in the 4A, are decided the first day in Idaho state tournaments, with the team competition going two days. … In the girls event, Moscow’s Karen Christian and Kikki Tatham shot 91s to just miss the top-10. Olivia Weber of Hillcrest leads with a 71. Bishop Kelly (317) leads the team race. Moscow is fourth at 392.

“Kellogg placed four in the top 10 and stands second in the girls team competition at the Idaho 3A championships in Buhl. Alyssa Jarvey (102) was seventh, Erin Redmond (103) eighth and Taryn Cochrane (105) and Kelsey Hardin (105) tied for ninth. Sheryl Bitter of Shelley won the state championship with an 85. Holly Martin of Priest River shot a 112. Shelley leads Kellogg 408-415 in the team race. … Bonners Ferry is tied for fourth with a 364 and Kellogg (391) is ninth heading into today’s final round of the boys event. Shelley leads with a 329. Tommy Higham of Shelley won the state title with a 76. Wallace’s Dillon Deitz just missed the top 10 with an 87. Dan Masterson of St. Maries shot an 89. Grant Williams led Kellogg with a 95.

“Wallace boys and girls stand in sixth place after the first day of the 36-hole Idaho 2A championships in Burley. The Wallace boys are at 382. Soda Springs has a 23-stroke lead with a 319. The individual title is decided on the first day. Zach Dekruyf from Magic Valley Christian won the state championship with a 72. … In the girls event, Wallace has a 489 behind leader Wendell’s 431. Orofino is third at 443. Jaci Lancaster from Wendell won the state title with an 86. Orofino’s Shanna Herman finished third with a 96.

Track and field

Laura Jacobsen, a junior at Walla Walla Valley Academy, won the girls high jump by 5 inches at 5-foot-3, and 300 hurdles winners Ashley Stabl, a senior from Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia, and Morgan Baker, a Waitsburg-Prescott senior, highlighted the first day of the Washington District 9 2B meet in Clarkston. Stabl won by more than 15 seconds with a 45.37-second clocking. Baker bested teammate Josh Smith 39.93-40.40 in the boys 300 hurdles. After finals in six events Monday, the meet winds up today beginning at 4 p.m. The top two in each event advance to the State 2B meet May 23-24 at Eastern Washington University.
