How to participate in historic preservation

Mary Jane Honneger Correspondent

The National Trust for Historic Preservation helps people protect, enhance and enjoy the places that matter to them.

Who is “them” anyway? It’s you. All across our country there are places that matter to all of us – and it’s up to all of us to stand up and make sure that our favorite landmark gets its due. And what better time than National Preservation Month to join in our campaign and submit your photo or video about someplace that matters to you.

Sharing a story about your favorite place is easy:

Go to www.preservationnation.org/thisplacematters.

Download and print out a “This Place Matters” sign from this Web site.

Snap a photo of people holding the sign and standing in front of a building or place of particular significance to you.

Then, upload the photo (or photos) to the National Trust , and post a brief story about the place and why it matters.

Tell a friend to look at your special place online and urge them to add one of their own.

Want to do more?

Share your YouTube video clips about your home, neighborhood or favorite historic place by including the tags “preservationnation” and “thisplacematters” when you post your video to YouTube. Then, send an e-mail to socialmedia@nthp.org and it will be added to the play list.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently launched the PreservationNation channel on YouTube. Visit the site to view and share your preservation-related videos.
