A Bonners Ferry man was killed and a woman was injured Friday morning when another car hit a deer and it came through their windshield.

The Idaho State Police and Bonner County deputies responded to the crash at 8:30 a.m. at milepost 490 on U.S. Highway 95 near the Elmira Store.

Stephen Cummings, 62, of Sandpoint, was driving his Chevy Sprint northbound on U.S. 95 and struck the deer.

The deer’s body was thrown into the southbound lane, where it crashed through the windshield of a Honda Civic driven by 69-year-old Alan L. Roebuck.

“The deer came through the windshield of the Honda, striking Mr. Roebuck,” according to an ISP news release.

“Alan Roebuck died on scene.”

His passenger, Georgina S. Roebuck, also of Bonners Ferry, was taken to Bonner General Hospital.

Man dies in blaze at home near Oldtown

A Friday morning fire killed an 84-year-old man who lived off state Highway 41 near Oldtown.

The man’s 75-year-old wife said she stoked the woodstove and left her husband sitting in a chair in the living room. When she returned, the house was on fire, and she was unable to get inside.

Bonner County dispatchers received a call at 6:13 a.m. about the fire at 35946 Highway 41.

Donna Jean Shults told officials she left the home about 5:50 a.m.

“When she returned, approximately 15 to 20 minutes later, she saw black smoke pouring out of the house,” Sheriff Elaine Savage said in a news release.

When firefighters were able to enter the home, they found Bryan C. Shults’ body near the back door.

“It is believed Shults was attempting to exit the residence when he was overcome by smoke,” Savage said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Savage said.

86-year-old woman’s new television stolen

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the reported theft of a TV from an 86-year-old woman who is legally deaf and blind.

The woman, who retains some hearing, had just paid $1,000 for a flat-screen television that had volume sufficient for her to enjoy shows, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan said.

A caregiver alerted deputies to the crime earlier this week.

The new 42-inch television was at the home when the caregiver left Monday, but it was gone when she returned for her Tuesday shift.

Deputy Ken Mosher was unable to determine how many people were involved in the burglary, nor how they got inside the home in the 5600 block of Hogan Lane in south Spokane County, Reagan said in a news release.

Anyone with information is asked to call (509) 242-TIPS (8477).
