In brief: Money available for agencies

Spokane Valley city officials are taking applications for $130,000 the city will award next year to economic-development and social-service agencies.

Agencies must explain in writing, by 5 p.m. July 25, how they would serve the community with a share of the money. They also may be asked to give a three- to five-minute presentation to the City Council on Aug. 19.

Winners will be announced by Oct. 31, and the money will be disbursed in 2009.

This year’s recipients were: Greater Spokane Inc., $65,000; International Trade Alliance, $25,000; Spokane Valley Partners, $20,000; Spokane Valley Meals On Wheels, $5,500; Spokane Valley Arts Council, $5,000; Spokane Neighborhood Economic Development, $4,000; Big Brothers Big Sisters, $3,000 and Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council, $2,500.

Block Party will be Thursday

The seventh annual West Valley Community Appreciation Block Party will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at West Valley High School, 8301 E. Buckeye Ave.

There will be a free spaghetti dinner, as well as student performances, activities for children, door prizes and free family photos. The annual event is hosted by the West Valley School District board of directors.

U-Hi singers perform Friday

The University High School Lirico Chamber Singers will perform for the community at 7 p.m. Friday at the school, 12420 E. 32nd Ave.

The select group of vocalists includes several soloists and more than 35 selections will be performed. The concert is titled “An Evening with Lirico.” Admission is $5 at the door.

Sullivan Park

Basset blast today at Sullivan Park

Bring your lovable hound dog to the 10th annual Basset Blast today from noon to 2:30 p.m. in Sullivan Park on Sullivan Road just north of Indiana. There will be raffles, and T-shirts will be available. Contests for the dogs include best waddle, best howl, best costume and longest ears.

The cost is $15 per hound. Pets must be on a leash and no puppies under four months are allowed. The annual fundraiser is sponsored by Washington Basset Rescue and SCRAPS.
