When a family finds its dream home, most REALTORS® will tell you they experience a deep feeling of pride in helping families realize their dream of homeownership.

Part of a touching Spokane tradition for more than 25 years, area third-graders, who are often some of the youngest “homeowners” in the family, draw pictures of their home and write an essay on “What my home means to me.” The Spokane Association of REALTORS® has sponsored this third-grade poster and essay contest in Spokane-area schools since the early 1980s.

This year, judges received 248 colorful posters and thoughtful essays. Winners and honorable mentions were on display to the public May 1-5 at River Park Square.

On Thursday, May 8, the top four winners, their teachers, and family members were guests of honor at the annual Spokane REALTOR® awards luncheon, held at the Red Lion River Inn. Each student read her essay aloud to a packed audience. When they finished, dry eyes in the room were rare.

The REALTORS® always look forward to the Third-Grade Poster and Essay Contest, sponsored by the Spokane Association of REALTORS® for National Homeownership Week.

See p. 4 of this section for the contest results.
