NWC golfers in the running at state

A pair of Northwest Christian freshmen turned in stellar first rounds at the State 1B/2B boys golf tournament at Lake Padden Golf Course in Bellingham.

John Graham shot a 5-over-par 77 and sits in second place, three strokes behind the leader after the first day of the two-round tourney. Teammate Jared Descoteaux is third after a 78.

Other local golfers qualifying for the second round are: Odessa’s Zack Powell (81, sixth place); Wilbur-Creston’s Colton Berg (82, seventh); NWC’s Travis McConahy (87, 16th); St. John-Endicott’s Tate Schauble (88, 17th); Valley Christian’s Zach Smith (91, 29th); NWC’s Jeff Gullikson (93, 34th); SJE’s Mike McLain (93, 34th); Tekoa-Oakesdale’s Zack Smith (94, 38th), W-C’s Keith Pouley (94, 38th); and Davenport’s Alex Zeller (94, 38th).

In girls competition at the same course, Odessa’s Kira Powell is in second place after shooting 90 – 12 shots behind the leader.

Other local golfers who made the cut are: SJ-E’s Emma Raynor (104, 12th); NWC’s Hayley Graham (104, 12th); W-C’s Alison Reed (115, 24th); and SJE’s Erin Schuster (122, 28th).

“Ryan England of Lakeside (Nine Mile) is tied for third place after the first round of the State 1A boys tournament at North Bellingham Golf Course.

England carded a 3-over 75, six strokes off the pace.

Other locals who advanced to today’s final round are: Freeman’s Max Riggs (79, 12th); Freeman’s Dylan Maine (80, 18th); Colfax’s Kyle McPherson (80, 18th); Freeman’s Tyler Barrong (82, 27th); Lakeside’s Aaron Filion (83, 31st); and Lakeside’s Kurtis Jelinek (84, 35th).

In girls play at the same course, Chewelah’s Gracie Schory is in fifth place after the first round.

Schory shot a 20-over 92 – 12 shots behind the leader.

Freeman’s Darby Moberg is sixth after shooting 94, while Lakeside’s Brandi Mahoney made the cut with a 119.

“Corey Meyers of Deer Park is in fifth place after the first round of the State 2A boys tournament at Loomis Trail Country Club in Blaine.

Meyers carded an even-par 72 and sits four shots off the pace.

Pullman’s Dillon Williams is tied for sixth place after a 73.

Other local golfers who made the cut are: Colville’s Casey Cox (74, 10th); Clarkston’s Bo Baker (77, 20th); Colville’s Drew Cowbrough (80, 25th); and Clarkston’s Matt Olson (81, 29th).

In the girls 2A tournament at Homestead Farms Golf Resort in Lynden, Emily McCormick is tied for 10th place after shooting a 17-over 89.

Five other local golfers made the first-round cut – West Valley’s Jordyn Sodorff (13th, 92); Pullman’s Paige Whidbee (93, 16th); Cheney’s Molly Hobbs (100, 33rd); Cheney’s Sara Wainwright (100, 33rd); and Pullman’s Jennifer Sorenson (102, 40th).

East Valley’s Ben Johnson shot a 15-over 87 and finished 69th.

EV’s Jenni White made it to the second round of play in the girls 3A tournament at Shuksan Golf Club in Bellingham.

White shot a 21-over 93 and tied for 28th after the first round.

Mt. Spokane’s Alyssa Osterback finished with a 99, one shot off the cut.

Softball

DeSales beat Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia 10-3 in the District 9 2B tourney at Walla Walla Community College to earn the No. 1 seed to state. DeSales will open state against Liberty.

Dayton followed with a 15-5 win over T-O/R in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.
