The fourth-grade girls Sonic Drive-In Locomotives won their grade’s championship at the 22nd annual Best in the West tournament May 10-11 held in and around Yakima.

The team ran its record against grade level to 21-1 and their overall record to 33-4 with a 39-24 victory over Mabton in the championship game. They burst to a quick nine-point lead and never looked back.

The tournament featured outstanding play from all team members, as the Locomotives specialty of outstanding ball movement was on display. Every player scored in the tournament, led by Payton Douglass and Megan Dean. Dean was also the leading rebounder, 48 rebounds in the five games the team played.

It’s the second championship the Locomotives have to their name. The team was also the undefeated 2007-08 Spokane Regional AAU Champions, having won that championship in February.
