Jansen sisters earn Scotties’ first team tennis title

The Freeman tennis duo of Hanna and Lea Jansen last week brought home the school’s first State 1A doubles tennis championship and with it the Scotties’ first state team tennis title.

The Scotties scored 14 points as the Jansens won four-straight matches en route to the title. Also adding points in the team triumph was singles player Bree Riddle.

Hanna and Lea Jansen did not lose a set on their way to the finals, sweeping teams from Coupeville, Connell and Tenino, Wash., to earn a slot in the championship against Charlotte Scott and Cassie Mullen from Bush.

Following a tiebreaker 6-7 loss in the opening match, the Freeman pair swept 6-1, 6-1 games to claim the championship.

Not that the title came as a surprise. Earlier this year Lea Jansen, a sophomore, captured the Inland Empire Tournament girls singles championship and has an extensive tennis background. At the time she said, in a story in The Spokesman-Review, that she was choosing to play doubles with her senior sister for a shot at state.

Riddle lost her singles opener to eventual champion Sasha Carter of Annie Wright, but came back with a pair of wins before missing by a match a top-six state place.

In other state tennis tournaments, West Valley 2A doubles players Brian Bergan and Chase Baxter lost twice, as did Valley Christian’s Sydney Eggleston and Jessica VanGelder in 2B/1B doubles.
