Region in brief: Detective injured during gun training
A Spokane County sheriff’s detective shot himself in the leg while training with a new gun Friday at Medical Lake.
The Sheriff’s Office is switching from Smith and Wesson guns to Glock .45-caliber semiautomatics, which require different holsters. Personnel were training at a gravel pit, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.
During a “rock and lock” exercise in which they draw their pistols, point at a target and re-holster without taking their eyes off the target, the detective missed his holster and fired a single bullet into his upper right leg about 2:30 p.m., Reagan said.
“He expressed in no uncertain terms that this was a painful injury,” he said.
Reagan declined to identity the detective but said he’s a 20-year veteran.
He was taken by ambulance to a Spokane hospital, where he was expected to undergo surgery to remove the bullet.
“It was just one of those accidental things,” Reagan said. “I’m sure he’s very embarrassed.”

Baby hospitalized after tub incident
An 11-month-old boy was hospitalized Friday afternoon after his mother found him unconscious in a bathtub she was filling for him and another child.
The mother, whose identity was not released, told Spokane police she went to the kitchen as the tub was filling at her home in the 2200 block of North Hamilton Street and heard her 3-year-old calling for help.
She ran back and discovered the infant face down in the tub. She called 911 and attempted CPR, according to police.
The boy was revived and taken to a hospital, where his condition was unavailable Friday night. Officials didn’t know how the baby got into the tub.

Upriver Drive open again as water eases
East Upriver Drive reopened Friday afternoon from Mission Avenue to Greene Street after being closed since May 22 because of water on the roadway, city of Spokane Engineering Services spokeswoman Ann Deasy said in a news release.
City officials closed the section of Upriver last week while the Spokane River was flooding.
As of Friday evening, the river remained slightly above flood stage, according to the National Weather Service Web site.
The weather service expected the river to drop below the critical 27-foot mark by early next week.

Two boys found after abduction
Benewah County sheriff’s deputies found two young boys Friday morning after they were abducted at knifepoint and taken by car from a home south of Emida, Idaho.
Their parents, from Mississippi, are in custody and have been charged in connection with the case.
Lt. Kathy Hills, of the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office, said boys, 4 and 5, were abducted from their grandmother’s home outside of Emida. The grandparents apparently have full custody of the children.
After a search with help from the Idaho State Police, deputies located and arrested 60-year-old Roger D. Shoemaker and 28-year-old Angela M. Shoemaker.
The Shoemakers were both charged with aggravated assault and noncustodial parental abduction.
