Cheney High among state award winners

From staff reports

Cheney High School was one of 100 schools in the state named a “School of Distinction” this week by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The State Superintendent’s Learning Improvement Award goes to the top 5 percent of elementary, middle and high schools and alternative schools that have shown progress in raising student achievement in math and reading during a six-year period. The OSPI evaluates WASL scores in determining which schools deserve recognition. The principal of each “School of Distinction” receives a trophy and banner to display.

Other Spokane County schools receiving the recognition include Indian Trail Elementary in District 81, Liberty Lake Elementary and Deer Park High School.

Eastern Washington schools also receiving the award include Springdale Elementary, Sadie Halstead Middle School in Newport, Tekoa High School, Rosalia Elementary and Secondary School, Odessa Middle and High School, Columbia High and Elementary, Colville Senior High School and Selkirk Junior-Senior High.

Kudos

The new Recreation Center at Eastern Washington University has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The award was given because of the building’s environment-friendly construction. The LEED green building rating system awards points for satisfying criteria including water savings, energy efficiency, natural lighting and low-maintenance landscaping.
