Colfax earns State 2B berth

Colfax, a former State 1A power, had no problems winning the District 7 2B at Reardan.

The Bulldogs swept Northwest Christian and Davenport in three games to win the tournament.

Erin Scholz sparked the Colfax championship with a combined 54 kills and 18 digs in the two matches.

Colfax will be joined at state in Yakima next week by the two teams it beat.

The Crusaders, after falling to the Bulldogs 25-13, 25-15, 25-17, rebounded to eliminate St. George’s in three games before Reardan took them to five games, 25-16, 23-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11. NWC had beaten Reardan in the opening round in Thursday.

Christian Webb had 24 digs and 17 kills in the five-game marathon with Reardan.

Davenport fell to Colfax 25-15, 25-18, 25-19. The Gorillas reached the title game with a four-game win over Lind-Ritzville. Mariah Mielke led Davenport with 31 digs and five aces in the two matches.

Reardan had come through the loser’s bracket with a Thursday win over Springdale and a Saturday win over Lind-Ritzville in four games.

District 7 2A

There were no upsets on the opening day of the tournament with Pullman and West Valley reaching the title game with wins in their own gyms.

The Greyhounds defeated Colville in three games after the Indians had eliminated Clarkston in three. Shelby Cheslic led Pullman with 12 kills, Macey Brown had 21 digs and Katie Guettinger piled up 35 assists.

WV swept Riverside after the Rams took out Cheney in four games. Bailey Wold had 16 kills for WV while Alyssa Wold had 30 assists and five aces.

The two state berths will be decided at East Valley on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. when Pullman and West Valley square off for the district title. The loser then meets the winner of the Colville-Riverside match for the second spot at state.

1A regional

Northeast A champion Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) needed four games to qualify for state in Yakima next weekend, but after losing the first game to Brewster the Eagles advanced in style, 23-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-4.

Cami Alexander led Lakeside with 15 kills and seven aces and Sara Moffatt had 20 digs.

Freeman, the NEA second seed, didn’t fare as well against the Caribou Trail second seed Chelan, falling in three games.

The matches were played in Moses Lake.

District 9 2B

Tekoa-Oakesdale swept Liberty Christian in three games to win the tournament and top seed to state in Yakima. The Patriots then rebounded to beat Pomeroy, which hosted the tournament, 20-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-6 for the second berth at state. Earlier Pomeroy had defeated Garfield-Palouse in three games and DeSales in four to reach the final match.

District 7 1B

Wilbur-Creston won the district championship at Northwest Christian to lead four teams into the state tournament in Yakima next weekend.

The Wildcats swept Almira/Coulee-Hartline 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 as Allison Reed pounded 21 kills and Kelsey Beaver had 20 digs. Madeline Isaak had 18 assists, 13 digs and three aces for the Warriors.

Those two will be joined at State in Yakima by Odessa and Cusick.

Odessa, after losing to ACH, bounced back to eliminate Northport in a five-game marathon, taking the clincher 15-7. Jessica Heimbigner had 14 kills and Christina Johnson 40 assists.

Cusick came out of the loser’s bracket and reached state with a win over Sprague-Harrington. In the three-game sweep, Lydia Preischel had 10 kills and Chelsea Treischel 11 digs.

District 9 1B

At Pomeroy, LaCrosse-Washtucna and St. John-Endicott earned berths in the state tournament. The Tigercats beat the Eagles in four games, 25-16, 15-25, 25-22, 25-13 for the district title. St. John-Endicott came back to earn the second spot with a three-game sweep of Colton.
