Gonzaga men in first-place tie
Gonzaga moved into a tie for first place in the West Coast Conference with a 2-1 victory over Loyola Marymount on Sunday in Spokane.
The Bulldogs (9-7-2, 6-4-1 WCC) are tied with San Francisco atop the conference standings with 19 points, one point ahead of San Diego. Gonzaga has one match left, Sunday at Saint Mary’s. USD plays USF and Santa Clara next weekend, while USF plays Loyola Marymount in addition to facing USD.
Tim Muravez and Nick Barclay scored with 2 minutes, 7 seconds of each other in the first half, and the Bulldogs held on for the victory.
•Washington took an early lead but allowed two unanswered goals in a 2-1 loss to California in Berkeley, Calif.
Dylan Tucker-Gangnes scored for the Huskies (8-7-2, 3-4-2 Pac-10) in the 26th minute. The loss was the second in a row and third in four games for Washington.
Women’s soccer
Elysse Van Leer tapped in a rebound in the third minute of the second overtime, giving No. 24 Washington State a 1-0 win over Arizona State on Sunday in Pullman.
Van Leer’s goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and fourth game winner, tying her for fourth on the Cougars’ single-season list.
Washington State (10-5-5, 4-3-2 Pac-10) finished fifth in the conference, and will find out today at 5 p.m. whether the team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA championships. The Sun Devils fell to 8-8-4, 2-6-1.
•Washington played the final 50 minutes a player down, but held off Arizona for a 2-1 victory in Seattle to end the regular season. Veronica Perez and Kate Deines scored for the Huskies (14-5-1, 5-3-1 Pac-10), who finished tied for third place in the conference.
Washington freshman Alex Webber was given a red card with five minutes left in the first half. The Huskies were also without head coach Lesle Gallimore, who received a red card Friday against Arizona State.
Volleyball
Washington State was swept by 10th-ranked USC 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 in Pullman. Brittany Tillman had a career-high 15 kills for the Cougars (7-17, 0-13 Pac-10), and Emily Rooney had six kills and hit .500. Jessica Gysin and Alex Jupiter combined for 25 kills for the Women of Troy (14-8, 7-6).
•Fifth-ranked Washington bounced back to beat No. 9 UCLA 17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22) in Seattle.
The Huskies (19-4, 10-3 Pac-10), who are tied for second place in the conference, played their first four-set match of the season. The Bruins slipped to 16-8, 6-7.
Junior hockey
Dylan Tappe’s hat trick helped the Spokane Braves beat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 6-0 in Spokane. Joel Stewart scored twice and Cody Mesick also scored for the Braves, and Michael Smith stopped all 30 shots he faced.
