City forum presents Mayor Verner

Mayor Mary Verner will speak at this month’s Spokane City Forum Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Spokane First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St.

Verner will speak on the topic “Ideas for a Vibrant Spokane Economy.”

Reservations must be made by 4 p.m. Monday. The cost to attend is $10 or $5 for students. The cost of admission includes lunch.

Cultural Awareness Week at Whitworth

Whitworth University presents Cultural Awareness Week on Monday through Nov. 21. “Our Global Mosaic” will feature clubs from Whitworth and community groups representing different cultures.

Monday’s events include “A Taste of Culture: A Taste Bud Extravaganza” food fair, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; students and faculty will share their mission experiences in Mozambique and Africa, 7 to 9 p.m. Both events will be in the Hixson Union Building’s Multipurpose Room.

Tuesday: Craft and native beadwork sale, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Hixson’s Lied Square.

Wednesday: Documentary “For the Bible Tells Me So” will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall.

Thursday: “I Am From” project in Hixson’s Multipurpose Room from 4 to 6 p.m., including a skit and discussion; an arts and crafts exhibit featuring crafts from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica and more, 6 p.m. in Hixson’s Lied Square.

The celebration will end Friday with an international banquet at 5:30 p.m. in the Whitworth dining hall.

At 6:30, there will be an international fashion show and entertainment program for dinner guests. Performances will include Hawaiian dancing, steel drumming, French singing, African dancing, spoken word, and the Whitworth Exceptional Praise Gospel Choir.

Tickets for the banquet are $13 general admission, $10 for students and children, and free for children 5 and under. Tickets can be purchased prior to the event by calling the Whitworth University Information Desk at 777-3796. Tickets also can be purchased at the door.
