Man found in bale crushed to death
Investigators say a man found in a bale of waste paper earlier this week was crushed to death.
Police have not yet identified the victim, thought to be a homeless man.
He was found Monday inside a 1,500-pound bale of paper that originated in Garden City, a suburb of Boise, but was destined for recycling at a manufacturing plant in Twin Falls.
Erwin Sonnenberg, the Ada County coroner, said Wednesday his autopsy determined the man died from “crushing injuries consistent with being compacted.”
Police in Garden City say the victim is white and likely in his 50s.

Zoo’s new giraffe dies unexpectedly
A two-year-old giraffe that school children helped raise money to bring to the Boise zoo has died unexpectedly from a severe illness.
The animal died Tuesday.
Shingo was brought to the zoo seven weeks ago as part of a new African exhibit featuring giraffes, lions and zebras.
An autopsy indicates the giraffe died from peracute mortality syndrome, an illness that afflicts giraffes 12 years old and younger. Veterinarian Mark Drew said the animal did not respond to treatment and was euthanized.
