Help CVSD fill the bus

As the holiday season approaches, the number of those in need continues to grow.

Middle school students and staff in the Central Valley School District will do their part by hosting the annual Fill the Bus Food Drive next Saturday.

CVSD middle schools will park school buses outside local participating grocery stores, encouraging people to donate food and help fill each bus. The donations will go to the food bank at Spokane Valley Partners. Donations will be collected at the following locations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

•Albertsons, 13606 E. 32nd Ave., Horizon Middle School.

•Albertsons, 1304 N. Liberty Lake Road, Greenacres Middle School.

•Safeway, 14020 E. Sprague Ave., Evergreen Middle School.

•Yoke’s, 15111 E. Sprague Ave., North Pines Middle School.

•Fred Meyer, 15609 E. Sprague Ave., Bowdish Middle School.

Donations will also be accepted at the food bank at Spokane Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Saturday.

University and Central Valley High School Key Club members, along with members of the Spokane Valley Kiwanis, will join middle school students in their efforts when they unload the buses and distribute the food to needy families Nov. 24 and Nov. 25.

AP Scholar Awards

Forty-four students at Central Valley High School have earned AP Scholar Awards based on their scores on Advanced Placement exams.

Nationally, about 18 percent of AP students earn a high enough score to win an award. Twenty- three students earned an AP Scholar Award for completing three or more AP exams with a grade of 3 or higher. They are: Eric Anderies, Natalie Block, Kendra Brown, Andrea Clemons, Jamie Darnell, Ian Dickinson, Daniel Fladager, Abigail Gehrett, Aaron Gruis, Ethan Harrison, Curtis Hoffman, Emily Juhre, Sean Kinard, Jasmine Loupe, Theora Rice, Andrew Richards, Rusty Shellhorn, Brietta Slama, Kyle Staples, Austen Szott, Katherine Termath, Lingbo Tong and Erika Weeks.

The AP Scholar with Honor award for earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams or grades of 3 or higher on four exams was given to 12 students. They are: Blake Baker, Josiah Brown, Kyle Brown, Edward Crossen, Kalen Davis, Brooke Ford, Kayla Lockhart, Conrad Malinak, Nicholas Morden, Kirsten Ronngren, David Wang and Matthew Weiser.

The AP Scholar with Distinction award for earning an average grade of 3.5 on all AP exams or earning grades of 3 or higher on at least five exams was awarded to nine students. They are: Jeffery Allen, William Bernbaum, Brandon Campbell, Brittany Carter, Camille Carter, Matthew Edlin, Anthony Kanago, Christofer Koch and Michael Moore.

‘All About Math’

The Central Valley School District’s “All About Math” public forum will be Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the CVSD Board Room, 19307 E. Cataldo Ave. Parents and members of the community are encouraged and welcome to attend.

The K-12 Mathematics Adoption Committee, hosting the forum, will explain the new statewide math standards and best practices in mathematics instruction. Forum participants will be invited to provide input about their goals for math instruction in Central Valley Schools.

The “All About Math” public forum is the first of a series, allowing parents and community members to understand the math curriculum and provide imput to the 47-member committee, consisting of teachers, parents, community members and administrators. Additional forums will be held in the winter and spring.
