A playoff proposal
The discussions are heating up once again to push for a playoff system for college football. I have a proposal that adds one extra game for four teams.
This season all the games, including the conference championships, will be concluded by Dec. 6. Some acceptable means could be used to rate the strength of the conferences. The four strongest conferences then each certify a team to represent them to play for the national title with the semifinals to be the following weekend (Dec. 13) at a neutral bowl site. By using the Sagarin ratings, that would put teams from the Big 12, SEC, Big Ten and ACC in the playoffs. The winners would play Jan. 8 for the national title. All other bowl games would be determined in the usual BCS fashion.
People will argue that their team is better than the chosen ones. So what? We are determining the champion, not the strongest team. The champion went through the most grueling test.
