EWU class putting on carnival at Salnave

Salnave Elementary students and their families will have a tropical afternoon today with students in the recreation programming class at Eastern Washington University.

The Tropical Treasure Carnival will be presented from 3 to 5 p.m. and will include food, snacks, drinks, 13 carnival booths and prizes. Highlights include tropical bowling with coconuts and tiki heads, jumping castles, a raffle and a giant game of Twister.

“Everything is bundled into a tropical theme,” said Brian Reed, 22, a student in the class heading up the public relations committee.

Reed said that everyone in the class helped find sponsors to donate prizes.

“Even with slow economic times, everyone got three (sponsors) in a month,” Reed said.

Raffle prizes include a pizza party at the Cheney Fire station, a night’s stay at the Ramada Inn at the Spokane Airport, goldfish from Northwest Seed and Pet, a book bag from Barnes & Noble and EWU basketball tickets.

The recreational programming class presents one carnival each quarter – one in Cheney, one in Spokane and a third in varying locations. The theme changes each time.

Reed said he is looking forward to interacting with the kids at Salnave. He hopes the college students will be an inspiration to the younger ones, encouraging them to attend college.

“Their energy really comes over into ours, and our energy comes over into theirs,” he said.

Other carnival presenters include the Cheney Parks and Recreation Department and Cheney Public Schools, Reed said.
