Appel leads Cardinal

Jayne Appel scored eight straight points in overtime to lift No. 5 Stanford to a 78-70 victory over No. 19 Purdue on Friday in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic.

Appel overcame a rough start and finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds and Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 17 points and six rebounds for the Cardinal (4-1).

Appel, just 2 of 11 in the first half, scored six straight points to tie the game 63-63 in regulation, and freshman Kayla Pedersen’s layin gave Stanford a 65-63 lead. But Lakisha Freeman’s free throws tied it with 43 seconds remaining.

Freeman led Purdue (3-1) with 17 points. Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton had 15 points, including 13 in the second half, to go with nine rebounds and four blocks.

Stanford’s Jillian Harmon appeared to have made a buzzer-beater in regulation near the free-throw line. But referees met for a couple of minutes and ruled the shot didn’t count, sending the game to overtime tied at 65.

Officials didn’t have a replay to rely on.

(3) California 68, Texas Tech 54: At St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Ashley Walker scored 30 points to help the Bears rout the Lady Raiders at the Paradise Jam tournament.

Cal (5-0) has won its first five games for only the second time in school history.

Texas Tech cut a 38-29 halftime deficit to four as the Lady Raiders held Cal scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the second half. Devanei Hampton ended the drought, hitting the sixth 3-pointer of her career to restore the cushion. Her basket started a run that restored the lead to 13 on Walker’s 3-pointer.

The Bears extended the advantage to 16 when Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry was ejected after arguing a call.

Dominic Seals led the Lady Raiders (4-2) with 10 points.

Walker has scored 30 points in a game three times in her career. The Bears will play Iowa in the tournament finale today.

(6) Baylor 62, Villanova 57: At St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Jessica Morrow scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half, and the Bears edged the Wildcats in the Paradise Jam.

Rachel Allison added 16 points, and Jhasmin Player had 14 for Baylor (6-0).

Laura Kurz scored 17 points and had three blocks to lead Villanova (2-3).

Baylor will play Wisconsin today in its final game of the tournament. Villanova will face Central Florida.

(8) Texas A&M 61, Penn St. 57: At Malibu, Calif., Takia Starks scored 20 points and Danielle Gant added 14, leading the Aggies (5-0) to a victory over the Lady Lions (3-2) in the first round of the Timeout 4 HIV/AIDS tournament.

Texas A&M shot 8 for 12 from the foul line the final three minutes to hold off Penn State. Tyra Grant, who scored 22 points, had an opportunity to tie the game with 6.2 seconds left, but missed one of her two foul shots.

Brianne O’Rourke added 14 points and Julia Trogele scored 12 for Penn State.

(21) Arizona State 80, Hofstra 54: At Freeport, Bahamas, Briann January (Lewis and Clark HS) scored a season-high 19 points and Dymond Simon added 15 to help the Sun Devils beat the Pride (1-3) in the Junkanoo Jam.

January made all six of her field-goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers, and all five of her free throws for Arizona State (3-1).
