Sooners earn win in overtime
Blake Griffin had 18 points, including the go-ahead free throws in overtime, and matched a career high with 21 rebounds to help No. 11 Oklahoma rally past No. 10 Purdue 87-82 on Friday in the championship of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.
Willie Warren added a career-high 22 points and Taylor Griffin had 19 for the Sooners (6-0), who are off to their best start since winning their first 10 games in 2003.
E’Twaun Moore scored 22 points to lead Purdue (5-1), which jumped ahead 80-76 in overtime before Warren scored in the lane and Tony Crocker made a free throw. Blake Griffin got the ball inside with 1:05 left and was hacked across the arm, then made both free throws for an 81-80 lead.
Cade Davis made a pair of foul shots with 16.4 seconds left to push the lead to three, but Purdue never got a chance to tie it up. Moore was stripped before he could take a shot, and the Sooners sealed it from the free-throw line.
Nemanja Calasan added 20 points and Lewis Jackson and Robbie Hummel had 10 each for Purdue, which was enjoying its highest ranking in nearly 10 years. Hummel also had nine rebounds, but the all-Big Ten forward played only 24 minutes because of foul problems.
Blake Griffin also had 32 points and 15 rebounds in a semifinal win over Alabama-Birmingham, helping him earn the tournament MVP award.
(5) Michigan State 94, Oklahoma State 79: At Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Raymar Morgan scored 29 points as the Spartans rebounded from their first loss of the season with a convincing win over the Cowboys in a losers’ bracket game at the Old Spice Classic.
Travis Walton added 16 points for Michigan State (3-1), which was upset by Maryland 80-62 in the opening round.
Oklahoma State (4-2) got 21 points from Terrel Harris. The Cowboys were beaten 83-71 by No. 9 Gonzaga on Thursday.
Morgan had 9 points, and Marquise Gray and Kalin Lucas added eight apiece to help Michigan State take a 44-29 halftime lead. Gray and Lucas finished with 12 points each.
(19) Wake Forest 82, UTEP 79: At Anaheim, Calif., Jeff Teague capped a 29-point performance by making two free throws with 14 seconds remaining, leading No. 19 Wake Forest to an 82-79 victory over Texas-El Paso in the 76 Classic.
James Johnson added 18 points and Al-Farouq Aminu scored 15 for the Demon Deacons (5-0), who advanced to Sunday’s championship of the eight-team tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Stefon Jackson scored 31 points; Randy Culpepper added 15 and Arnett Moultrie had 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Miners (3-2).

Jerome Randle had a game-high 18 points and Theo Robertson added 12 points to lead California (5-0) past host UNLV 73-55 at the Global Sports Classic in Las Vegas. Wink Adams was the lone UNLV (5-1) scorer in double figures with 10 points. Rene Rougeau had a game-high 11 rebounds for UNLV. … Taj Gibson had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead host Southern California to a 70-43 nonconference victory over Tennessee-Martin (2-3) in Los Angeles. Dwight Lewis scored 13 points and freshman DeMar DeRozan finished with 12 points for USC (4-2).

Patrick Mills scored 21 points, Diamon Simpson added 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, and Saint Mary’s beat Cal State Fullerton 79-54 in the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Omar Samhan added 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Gaels (4-1). … Former Washington State player Josh Akognon scored 24 points for Cal State Fullerton (2-4), which shot a season-low 34.5 percent in losing its third straight game. Marcio Lassiter added 12 points for the Titans.
