Unbeaten Marquette drops GU

EWU ends road losing streak

Krystal Ellis scored seven of her 12 points in the final seven minutes of the game – when the Marquette Golden Eagles held Gonzaga without a field goal – on their way to an 80-77 victory over the Bulldogs at the WBCA Classic Friday in Milwaukee.

Ellis was one of five Golden Eagles in double-figures scoring. Paige Fiedorowicz led the way with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Angel Robinson and Lauren Thomas-Johnson chipped in with 13 apiece while Ellis and Georgia Jones had 12 each.

The Bulldogs’ loss overshadowed an outstanding game by Courtney Vandersloot.

The sophomore guard poured in 32 points with eight rebounds and eight assists. Vivian Frieson chipped in with 12 points.

Marquette (5-0) won its 10th-straight game dating to last season, when it won the WNIT championship.

Vandersloots’ jumper with 7 minutes, 34 seconds remaining put Gonzaga (5-1) up 71-63.

But it was the last field goal the Bulldogs would make.

Gonzaga faces Utah at 3 p.m. PST today.

•Nicole Scott had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots and the Eastern Washington Eagles ended a 14-game losing streak in games away from home with a 70-69 overtime victory over the UNLV Rebels at the Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas.

The Eagles will face Georgia, an 85-64 winner over Cal State Fullerton, for the tournament title today.

The Eagles (2-2) held a 35-24 lead with 16:39 to play, but UNLV battled back and tied the score at 62 with 56 seconds remaining in regulation.

After the Rebels (3-1) jumped out to a 67-64 lead with 2:39 remaining in overtime, the Eagles scored six straight points – two apiece from Scott, Amy Bratvold and Julie Piper – to take a 70-67 lead.

A pair of UNLV free throws brought the Rebels to within 70-69 with 37 seconds left. Eastern ran the shot clock down before missing a shot. The Rebels grabbed the defensive rebound with five seconds left and missed a possible game-winning layup at the buzzer.

Tatjana Sparavalo led the Eagles with 15 points. Piper joined Scott with 13, while Brianne Ryan had 11 and Bratvold 10.

•Kate Kevorken scored 23 points and Jamie Schroeder added 20 and the Northern Colorado Bears hit 8 of 12 3-pointers in the first half to open a 20-point lead and held on for an 86-79 victory over the Washington State Cougars in the first round of the odwalla Classic at San Francisco.

WSU’s Jazmine Perkins equaled a school record for freshmen with 28 points, tying her with Nikki Mohr, who scored 28 points against Puget Sound on Nov. 26, 1983.

Heather Molzen and April Cook chipped in 18 points apiece for WSU (2-2). Molzen had nine rebounds.

Courtney Stoermer and Whitley Cox also reached double figures for Northern Colorado (3-1) with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The Cougars face tournament host San Francisco Sunday.

•Leah Pomante scored 19 points and Liz Horiatis had 13 points and 11 rebounds and the Whitworth Pirates (3-2) broke the game open in the second half and cruised to a 76-46 non-conference victory over the Caltech Beavers (0-3) in Pasadena, Calif.

Cassie Pilkinton added 14 points for Whitworth.

•Michelle Augustavo scored 15 points and was one of five Washington players in double figures as the Huskies (2-2) routed the Seattle University Redhawks (1-2) 82-56 in the Husky Classic at Seattle.

Washington has won two in a row and will play Sunday for the tournament championship against Clemson (4-2), a 68-53 winner over Kent State.

Kent State (3-1) will take on Seattle in Sunday’s third-place game.
