Cougars finish seventh

Washington State University finished seventh in the Husky Invite on Tuesday on Bremerton’s 7,111-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club’s Olympic Course.

Junior Austin Hurt led the Cougars throughout the tournament with a three-round total of 6-over-par 222.

Washington State had an overall score of 892, 28 over par.

Freshman Trent Sanders was 2-under with a third-round 72 and junior Kevin Tucker posted even-par in the final round.

Host Washington won the tournament with an 857 total, 13 strokes better than runner-up California.

The Cougars are in the Desert Intercollegiate, Oct. 4 in Palm Desert, Calif.

•Gonzaga University placed 16th at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, shooting a final-round 300.

The Bulldogs had a 54-hole total of 893.

Sophomore Kyle Huus shot 74 and finished tied for 18th individually with a 217. Jason Azzarito had his second straight 71 for a three-round total of 220.

San Francisco totaled 855 and finished ahead of Wisconsin by five strokes for the victory.

Women

Gonzaga turned in a record-setting performance, tying for 11th at the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in Broomfield, Colo.

The Bulldogs finished at 896, the first time a Gonzaga women’s team has scored under 900 for a 54-hole event. And it was the first team to have back-to-back sub-300 scores.

Freshman Jessica Howe and sophomores Sage Suffecool and Rachel Sibbit each shot final-round 74s and freshman Stephanie Corey finished with a 75.

Howe tied for 24th with her three-round total of 220, one stroke better than Suffecool.

Notre Dame was the team winner, beating Texas Tech by five strokes.

Also, Eastern Washington University was a perfect 4-0 versus Big Sky Conference rivals and improved to 7-1 against league schools so far during the Colorado event, while finishing 15th in the overall standings.

The Eagles finished ahead of Montana State, Portland State, Weber State and Northern Colorado.

Eastern’s steadiest player throughout the tournament was Marli Mikulecky who shot 218 and tied for 20th, thanks in large part to a final-round 70.

Eastern Washington plays at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., beginning Monday.
