Warriors sign Dickau
Former Zags star comes from Italy
OAKLAND, Calif. – To give themselves some insurance in the backcourt, the Golden State Warriors signed former Gonzaga University player Dan Dickau on Wednesday as coach Don Nelson plans to carry three point guards on his roster – at least until Monta Ellis returns to take one of those roster places.
“It’s good to have (Dickau) in camp,” Nelson said. “I’m going to keep three point guards. Veteran point guards are hard to find.”
Dickau, 30, had playing for Air Avellino in Italy since August, then he and the team mutually agreed to part ways earlier this week. Dickau, who was drafted 28th overall in the first round by the Sacramento Kings in 2002 and has been traded eight times during his NBA career, said he was happy the Warriors signed him.
Dickau appeared in 67 games and made eight starts for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, averaging 5.3 points, 2.6 assists and 1.4 rebounds in just more than 15 minutes per game.
“I think it’s a good situation,” Dickau said. “Obviously, coming in late is going to make it tougher for me. I was in a situation overseas that wasn’t working out. Fortunately, we were able to make this happen. We’re here and looking forward to making the most of it.”
The Warriors plan to meet with Ellis’ representative next week to discuss any potential disciplinary action or fine because of his moped-related ankle injury.
