Individuals, groups honored in the arts
Four people and three organizations were presented awards Monday night for their contributions to the arts in Spokane.
This was the 17th time the Spokane Arts Commission handed out the annual city of Spokane Arts Awards.
Ken Spiering won the individual artist award for his public art and work with other artists. The Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox won the arts organization award for its successful restoration and reopening of the theater.
The arts in education award went to Spokane Public Schools fine arts coordinator Dave Weatherred.
Dr. Elizabeth Welty won the individual benefactor award, with the business benefactor award going to Spokane Public Radio.
Spokane Children’s Theatre and Spokane Civic Theatre organizer Toni Gilmartin won the arts community leadership award. And the “Bold Strokes Award” went to Transitions’ Women’s Hearth for its work with art to help homeless women grow.

Doing It to plant red oak trees
The Doing It committee of the Spokane Preservation Advocates is planning a tree planting job in the Logan Neighborhood on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. Volunteers are gathering at 424 E. Sinto Ave. and will plant several red oaks in the historic neighborhood.
Volunteers for the morning work party are being sought, and are asked to bring gloves, a shovel or pick. Coffee and snacks will be provided. For more information, contact Susan Traver at 624-6555.
