Eastern tops Big Sky leader PSU

Hayley Hills had 20 kills and Ashley Hamilton 55 assists as Eastern Washington knocked off Big Sky Conference volleyball leader Portland State 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 Friday night in Cheney.

After dropping the first game to the Vikings (12-5, 5-2), Eastern stormed back from a 21-16 deficit in the second with Cora Kellerman serving four straight points. Down 24-23, the Eagles (7-9, 4-3) ran off the last three points, including kills by Hills and Alysha Cook.

•Eleventh-ranked USC swept Washington State 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 in Pacific-10 Conference action in Los Angeles. Jackie Albright had nine kills and 15 digs for the Cougars (7-9, 0-5).

•Becky Perry’s kill capped sealed a run of five points in the fifth game as No. 10 Washington beat eighth-ranked UCLA 25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11 in Los Angeles.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (19-15, 5-4) moved up in the NWAACC East standings with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-21 sweep of Wenatchee Valley at SFCC.

Women’s soccer

Washington State came within a minute of a regulation upset of third-ranked UCLA, but Lauren Cheney’s goal forced overtime and Kristina Larsen scored in the 101st minute – when a WSU clearing pass hit her in the back – to lift the unbeaten Bruins to a 2-1 victory in Los Angeles in the Pacific-10 Conference opener.

Elysse Van Leer gave the 25th-ranked Cougars (6-3-3) a quick jump with a goal just 4:47 into the game, but the Bruins (10-0-2) controlled the action thereafter. Ten saves by Lindsay Parlee kept the Cougs close.

•Shantel Flanary’s two goals paced Utah State to a 4-0 romp over Idaho (1-11-1) in the Western Athletic Conference opener in Logan, Utah.

•Washington’s Veronica Perez had a goal and an assist, but USC’s Amy Rodriguez’s second goal – in overtime – gave the Trojans (11-1) a 3-2 victory over the visiting Huskies (9-3) in their Pac-10 opener.

Men’s soccer

A penalty-kick goal by J.T. Howlan in the 19th minute launched San Diego to a 3-0 blitz of visiting Gonzaga – throwing the West Coast Conference standings into a four-way tie for first place. The Zags (2-2, 5-5-1) were outshot 16-8 by the Toreros (2-0, 2-5-3), with Kelin Briones getting the shutout.

•Jo Jo Katz and Brent Richards scored in Washington’s (2-0-1) 2-1 Pac-10 win over Oregon State (0-2-1).

Junior hockey

Conner Olstad and Dylan Tappe each scored in the Spokane Braves’ 5-2 KIJHL loss to the host Creston Valley Thunder Cats (6-3). The Braves are 7-4.
