Coeur d’Alene wins regional match

Finally, someone scored.

Hayley Smith cleaned up a deflection off a corner kick in the sixth minute to give Coeur d’Alene a 1-0 win over visiting Lake City in the 5A Region I girls soccer tournament Tuesday afternoon.

The two teams had played to two scoreless ties during the regular season before meeting in this loser-out game that ended the season for the Timberwolves (5-5-6). The goal came when a corner kick bounced off Viking Megan Roletto to Smith.

The Vikings (10-4-4) play for the regional title in Sandpoint Thursday afternoon.

Sandpoint got goals from Alicia Mertz and Bailey Hewett in the second half to turn back visiting Post Falls 3-1. The Trojans (5-12-1) had taken a 1-0 lead at 3 minutes on a goal by Kara Siers, but Hewitt tied it in the seventh minute. The Bulldogs (11-3-4) won on Mertz’ goal in the 50th minute.

Great Northern League: At West Valley, Kellie Zakrzewski scored two goals and assisted on a third as Cheney (7-4, 6-3) rolled past the Eagles (9-1, 8-1) 4-1. Molly McClure and Zakrzewski took turns setting each other up in the first 20 minutes. … Annalisa Druffel scored in the 58th minute as league-leading Pullman (9-2, 8-1) pulled out a 1-0 win over visiting Riverside (1-10, 1-8). … At Medical Lake, senior Courtney Kelly scored four goals as the Cardinals (6-5, 5-4) raced past Colville (0-10, 0-8) 6-3, which got two goals from Tasha Luu. … Stevie Harris scored three goals after Candace Leliefeld scored two early goals as Deer Park (6-5, 5-4) posted a 5-0 win at Clarkston (2-6).

Slowpitch softball

Greater Spokane League: University and Central Valley can officially decide which team is best when they meet for the league championship Thursday afternoon at U-Hi.

The two teams split during the regular season.

The finale was set up when the Titans (16-1) rolled past Ferris 10-0 and the Bears (15-2) held off Shadle Park 14-13.

Ferris (9-10) only managed four hits at U-Hi while the Titans banged out 16.

CV scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 14-9 lead before Shadle (12-7) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded when the game ended.

Volleyball

Greater Spokane League: Ferris (1-5) picked up its first league win by sweeping visiting Rogers (0-6) as Laura Walker and Kilie Kamitomo combined for 11 kills and four blocks. … League-leading Lewis and Clark (7-0) swept North Central (0-7) at LC as Janele Vogt had seven kills and three blocks and Oceana Bush had 12 digs. … At Shadle Park, Alexis Olgard had 24 kills, 17 digs, five aces and four blocks as Mead (5-1) got past the Highlanders (4-3) in four games. … After dropping the first game, East Valley (5-2) came back to win three straight against visiting Central Valley (3-3) as Kelse Kurtz wracked up 34 assists and Alie Riggin had 14 kills. … At Mt. Spokane the Wildcats (4-2) defeated Gonzaga Prep (3-3) 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20.

Great Northern League: At Medical Lake, Bailey Wold had eight kills and four aces and Alyssa Wold had 16 assists and eight digs as West Valley (8-1 GNL) swept the Cardinals (2-7). … At Pullman, Shelby Chelek and Stephanie Logan had nine kills apiece and Jodan Levenseller had three aces and five blocks as the Greyhounds (8-1) swept Riverside (4-5). … Sayde Davis had 25 assists and Jenna Hatch had 20 digs as Cheney (3-6) won two close games in a 3-1 win at Colville (6-3). … At Clarkston, the Bantams (3-6) won three games by nine points to turn back Deer Park (2-7) in four games. KC McConnel had 12 assists and 12 digs for the winners.

Intermountain League: Hayley Young had 15 digs and Sammie Squires had eight assists and four aces as Kellogg (4-4) swept visiting Bonners Ferry (1-6).

Cross country

Great Northern League: Amanda Wilson and Jess Mildes finished 1-2 as host Riverside edged Cheney 25-30 at Antler Springs Golf Course at Deer Park. Wilson beat her teammate by 26 seconds, finishing in 20 minutes, 13 seconds. For boys, Arich Zachman and Reese Martin went 1-2 as the Blackhawks, with four of the top five runners, topped the Rams 21-34. Zachman ran 16:42 to win by 3 seconds.

Boys soccer

District I-II tournament: At Moscow, Ian Engerbretson scored twice to lead the host Bears (11-3-2) to a 5-1 win over Lakeland (8-7-1) in a loser-out game. Peder Sortehag got the Lakeland goal on a penalty kick in the 50th minute. The Bears play at Sandpoint for the district title.
