It’s Lights On at Shaw
Barbie and everybody’s favorite superheroes will join the community at the second annual Lights On Celebration at Shaw Middle School tonight, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Families and kids of all ages can enjoy the mini-carnival, which includes not only Barbie and the heroes, but face painting, activity tables and family games. The Rogers High School drama team will also be on hand to share their talents and perform at the celebration.
Mallory Mitzner, the youth and community specialist at Shaw is coordinating the event. “Lights On is to promote keeping kids out of trouble,” she said. The goal of the community get-together is to support after-school programs.
The celebration is free and open to the public. Shaw Middle School is at 4106 N. Cook St.

Grant, North Central receive grants
The Spokane Public Schools Foundation recently awarded grants to Grant Elementary School and North Central High School.
The funds awarded to Grant Elementary will help the drummers and dancers involved in the 34 year-old program purchase new drums. North Central High School’s AP Cafe and AP Science Saturday program received the second grant from the foundation. The AP Science program’s goal is to “encourage participation in AP classes by providing tutoring and building the academic culture at North Central for students who have challenged themselves in advanced science,” according to a school press release.
The foundation has partnered with Spokane Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education’s TEConnections program. The partnership “creates opportunities for students to explore career pathways by focusing on their individual strengths and teaches them that a career is what you do, not who you are,” the press release said.
