Flood-plain meeting Nov. 6
A community meeting to discuss new federal 100-year flood plain designations for Spokane County is scheduled Nov. 6.
The 7 p.m. meeting, at Spokane Valley City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave., is sponsored by the city and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is responsible for the designations.
City officials urged residents of the Chester Creek, Forker Draw and Argonne Creek drainages to attend. The new designations may benefit many property owners in the Chester Creek area, but some residents there and elsewhere may find the new maps detrimental.
The maps will determine whether property owners need flood insurance and how much the insurance costs. They also affect construction standards for new buildings.
Representatives of FEMA, the city and the state Department of Ecology will be at the meeting to answer questions.
The maps and the report that accompanies them are available for review at City Hall or on the city’s Web site: www.spokanevalley.org.
