Ex-boyfriend shot in confrontation

A Spokane-area man was reported in stable condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center today after suffering a pair of gunshot wounds during an altercation north of Mead on Friday night.

Sheriff’s deputies said the man went to the mobile home of an ex-girlfriend in the 3900 block of East Center Street where he confronted the woman and a current boyfriend. Deputies said gunfire erupted during the confrontation and the man fled. A neighbor telephoned authorities after hearing the gunshots about 11 p.m., and the man who was shot also called.

The victim of the shooting was located in a vehicle a short distance away on North Yale Road and taken for medical treatment, including surgery for one of the gunshots, which penetrated along an arm and into his upper body. The incident is being turned over to detectives for investigation. No arrests were made.

Deputies said the three people involved were in their late teens or 20s.

BELFAIR, Wash.

Two kids missing after house fire

Two children are missing after fire swept through a home in the Beard’s Cove community west of Belfair on Hood Canal in Mason County.

Fire crews were called to the blaze just before midnight Friday and found the two-story home engulfed in flames. Because of the intensity of the blaze, firefighters were unable to enter the home.

Investigators said they planned to enter the charred remains of the home Saturday to look for the two missing children.

Mason County Fire Marshal Craig Haugen said seven people – two adults and five children – lived in the home.

The homeowner told dispatchers that the fire started in a couch and quickly spread to the rest of the home. The home’s occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors.

The fire is under investigation. Its cause has not been determined.

COEUR D’ALENE

Suit claims injury from gun misfire

A Coeur d’Alene man who said his hand was permanently injured when his gun exploded is suing a rifle-making company, a bullet manufacturer and Wal-Mart.

James Monette filed the lawsuit against rifle-maker Mossberg Corp., Wal-Mart and bullet manufacturer Remington Arms Co. in 1st District on Court Oct. 21, claiming that his rifle misfired and exploded, sending parts and fragments into his hand.

Monette is asking for damages in excess of $10,000, to be proven in court.

A Wal-Mart representative said the company had no comment because it had not yet reviewed the lawsuit.

Officials with the other companies could not be immediately reached.
