Eastern outlasts Notre Dame

Hayley Hills had 17 kills and 13 digs to lead Eastern Washington to a 3-1 win over Notre Dame in the Idaho Volleyball Classic in Moscow on Friday.

The Eagles (2-2) won the fourth game 25-19, the only game that didn’t go down to the wire. EWU won the first and third games 25-23 and the Irish (2-2) won the second game 25-21.

“This was validation that we can beat a good team,” first-year head coach Miles Kydd said. “We didn’t play a super match and there were things we could have done better, but any win gives you confidence and a win against a big program is something you can feel proud about.”

Ashley Hamilton had 45 assists and 10 digs for the Eagles. JaNae Mortensen added 22 digs and Alysha Cook had 10 kills.

In the second game, Idaho swept Washington State 3-0. For the Vandals (3-1), Haley Larsen had 13 kills, Kelsey James 31 assists and Kelsey Yonker 17 digs. Emily Rooney led the Cougars (3-1) with 12 kills and Bree Flach had 13 digs.

The round-robin tournament continues today with the first match, EWU-WSU at 10 a.m., and ending with UI-ND at 7.

•Gonzaga bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Portland State to beat Boise State 3-1 on the first day of the Northwest Challenge hosted by the Washington Huskies. Senior Paige Dillingham had a career-high 26 digs against the Broncos (0-6) and senior Elaina Renius had a career-high 12 kills to go with 17 kills as the Bulldogs (2-5) broke a five-match losing streak.

•Lewis-Clark State went 2-0 to take the first-day lead in the five-team Whitworth Volleyball Invitational. The host Pirates, Menlo and Montana Western all went 1-1 with Whitman 0-2.

Menlo handed Whitworth its first loss of the season with a sweep, all two-point games, before the Pirates (5-1) bounced back to edge Montana Western 3-2, winning the fifth game 15-7. The other four games with the Bulldogs were decided by four points, three of them going beyond 25 points.

Kaimi Rocha led the Bulldogs with 30 total kills while Bethany Castilleja had 36 digs.

•Community Colleges of Spokane and North Idaho College combined to go 5-0 in first-day action of the Inland Northwest Communications Tournament in Spokane. CCS swept Blue Mountain and Columbia Basin while NIC swept those two plus Linn Benton. The cross-border rivals meet at 11 a.m. today to determine the top seed into the 3:30 p.m. championship. For CCS, Molly Blankenship had 18 kills in the two games while setter Meghan De La Rosa had 72 assists and Alex Cey had 22 digs.

Women’s soccer

No. 11 Illinois scored with 15 minutes left to hand Washington State its first loss of the season 2-1 at the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic. Cory Steigerwald scored for the Illini (4-0-0) minutes after Mallory Fox scored on a penalty kick to tie the game for the Cougars (1-1-2). Illinois outshot the Cougars, who play No. 13 West Virginia on Sunday, 14-8, with WSU goalie Stephanie Phillips making five saves.

•Emily Rohde and Allie Smith scored 3 minutes apart to lift Whitworth to a 2-0 victory at UC Santa Cruz (1-1-1). After allowing a goal in the 18th minute, Callie Bergstrom had six saves for the Pirates (2-0).

•Cal State Bakersfield opened a 3-0 lead early in the second half and then held on to beat Eastern Washington 3-2 in Cheney. After the Roadrunners (3-2) scored in the 50th minute to add to a 2-0 halftime lead, the Eagles (0-3-1) battled back. Abby Jensen started the rally with a score on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, set up when Lauryn Koelzer was tripped on a breakaway. Then Koelzer scored at 77 minutes, set up by Chelsey Hannesson and Sara Byrne. The Eagles head to Berkeley, Calif., to play 22nd-ranked Missouri on Sunday.

•Maryann Brody scored in the 74th minute to lift Seattle (2-1-2) to a 1-0 win over Idaho (0-3-0) in the Vandals Governor’s Cup. In the other game, Boise State edged Idaho State 2-1. There are two games on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. with the UI and ISU game at 1:30.

•Amanda Swenson scored in the 70th minute to lift CCS to a 2-1 win at Southwestern Oregon in their league opener. Samantha Neinstadt opened the scoring for the Sasquatch.

•North Idaho fell to the Eastern Washington JV 1-0 when freshman Cora Speidel scored in the 10th minute.

Men’s soccer

Josh Peck made two saves on four shots as CCS battled to a 0-0 tie at Southwestern Oregon. The Sasquatch had nine shots and Southwestern goalie Drew Jones made three saves.

Rodeo

Some high scores marked the first day of action at the PRCA Spokane Interstate Fair Rodeo. Clayton Savage of Cheyenne, Wyo., had the big ride with an 87 on Cadillac Jack on a night when only two of 11 bull riders made the 8-second whistle. Jesse Wright of Buell, Idaho, leads the saddle bronc riders with an 85 on Owl Hoot Trail, while Steven Peebles of Redmond, Ore., topped the bareback riders with an 81 on Little Darling.

B.J. Campbell of Benton City, Wash., teamed with Russell Cardoza of Farmington, Calif., to top the team roping with a 5.2-second run. There was a tie at 9.3 seconds in tie down roping between a pair of Texans, Doug Pharr of Victoria and Stran Smith of Childress, who is ranked seven in the national standings. In barrel racing, Michele Hawkins of Hermiston, Idaho, leads the way at 17.37. Only one steer wrestler made a qualified run.

Senior golf

Jeff Coston added the Senior PGA championship to the Rosauer’s Open title he won earlier this summer in Spokane. Coston, who works at Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club in northwest Washington, shot a second-round 1-over-par 73 at the Tualatin (Ore.) Country Club to edge former Spokane resident Chris Mitchell and Jerry Johnson by one stroke. Coston had an opening-round 68 to finish at 3-under 141. Gary Lindeblad of Indian Canyon finished at 150.
