Bullpups knock Bears from unbeaten ranks

Stephen Hertz struck out eight and allowed one earned run in a complete-game effort and Galen Duff went 3 for 3 with two runs batted in to guide the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (2-3, 2-3) to a 5-2 victory over the visiting and previously unbeaten Central Valley Bears (5-1, 5-1) in Greater Spokane League baseball action on Wednesday.

Scott Simon hit a solo home run for CV.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Ferris used a pair of Shadle Park errors to score four first-inning runs and Gabe Arguinchona fanned five in 61/3 innings as the Saxons (3-3, 3-3) notched a 7-4 victory over the visiting Highlanders (3-3, 3-3). … Benny Baird allowed two hits and struck out six and Donnie Santos and Stephan Altberg each had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Lewis and Clark Tigers (2-4, 2-4) to a 10-0 six-inning victory over the host North Central Indians (1-6, 1-6). … Mead’s game at Mt. Spokane and University’s game at East Valley were postponed and both will be made up on Friday at 1 p.m.

Women’s golf

Teo Poplawski finished in sixth place with a three-round 9-over-par 222 to help the Idaho Vandals to a fourth-place showing at the Anteater Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro finished in a three-way tie for seventh after carding a 10-over 223.

Long Beach State won the team title with an 891, 12 shots better than runner-up UC Davis. San Francisco (904) was third, three strokes in front of the Vandals. UC Davis’ Chelsea Stelzmiller earned medalist honors with a 1-under 212.

Eastern Washington was last in the 14-team tourney. Kristina Gargaro led the Eagles with a 247.

College baseball

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch and the visiting Blue Mountain Timberwolves split a NWAACC doubleheader with the Sasquatch (10-7, 1-5) winning the opener 9-5 and the Timberwolves (15-11, 4-2) taking the nightcap 8-5. Colby Crawford and Cam Christian led the way for CC Spokane with four hits apiece on the day.

•The game between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Washington Huskies was rained out in Seattle and will not be made up.

Track and field

Mt. Spokane senior middle distance runner Courtney Zalud has signed a national letter of intent to compete for Washington State University next season. Zalud lettered in track and cross country four straight years.

The Cougars also announced sprinter Cindy Robinson of Norwalk, Calif., has signed a letter of intent.
