Fundraising event includes activities

Today, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lake City Senior Center, 1916 Lakewood Drive in Coeur d’Alene, a family fundraiser, silent auction, and dinner will be held to benefit local construction worker Ron Waltz.

Waltz became ill in Beijing, when he was there watching his son in the 2008 Olympic Games. He spent two weeks in a hospital in China, then came home and has spent time in Kootenai Medical Center.

The event includes live entertainment by Amara, local belly dancers, and eclectic music by Bill Rector. A Mediterranean dinner will be sponsored by The White House Grill, located in Post Falls.

Community brings autism awareness

April is Autism Awareness Month and the Panhandle Autism Society and North Star Childhood Development Center are joining together to celebrate with activities and fundraisers.

PAS and North Star will be selling Autism Awareness Lotion Bars, which can be purchased at Hayden Lake Chiropractic, 8235 Cornerstone Drive, this month. $2 of every bar sold will go toward the Autism Awareness campaign.

The third Thursday of the month, PAS will hold a Parent Support Group meeting at 1322 Sherman Ave., Suite E, at 6 p.m. Child care will be provided. To RSVP for childcare, call Tracy at (208) 661-4950.

PAS will host Family Day Out April 19, for those with autism spectrum disorders and their families. The event will be at Jump-A-Lot, 10260 Taryne St. in Hayden.

Cost is $10 per family. Scholarships are available. Pre-registration is required.

April 22 is Wear Jeans to Work Day, organized by PAS and North Star. Local businesses are asked to allow employees to wear jeans for a $5 donation to the Autism Awareness campaign.

Autism Awareness Month will end with a garage sale in the parking lot at Runge Furniture, 303 Spokane Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, on April 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Regional historian to speak on mining

Author and educator Katherine Aiken will be at the Lake City Senior Center, 1916 N. Lakewood Drive in Coeur d’Alene, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Aiken will speak about the history of the Bunker Hill Mine and other mining history in the Silver Valley, along with historical photographs of the area.

She is the dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Idaho. She wrote “Idaho’s Bunker Hill” in 2005 and is the co-author of “Idaho: The Heroic Journey” published in 2006.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by North Idaho College’s Molstead Library and the Museum of North Idaho.

Pamper pooch for Easter parade

Kootenai Humane Society is joining the staff of the Coeur d’Alene Pet Resort, 125 E. Hazel, Ave., for an Easter Pooch Parade and Basket Hunt from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited for the festivities at the Pet Resort.

The day includes pictures with the Easter Bunny, $5 Easter baskets, a noon costumed dog and owner parade, and a 1 p.m. Doggie Bon Bon Easter Basket Hunt. Prizes for the event will be awarded for Best Float, Best Dog Costume, Best Doggie Bonnet, Best Owner Bonnet, Best Pooch Easter Outfit, Best Dressed Owner and Pooch, and more. Prizes run the gamut from Easter baskets to overnight dog boarding, grooming and training.

Historical museum open for business

The Museum of North Idaho, 115 Northwest Blvd. in front of Coeur d’Alene City Park, is now open. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This Saturday is a free admission day.

Admission is $3 per person, $1 for children ages 6 to 16, and children younger then 6 are free. A family rate is $7 for two adults and children under 16. Members of the Museum of North Idaho are admitted free.

The Museum Store features local history books, silver jewelry and locally made gift items.

Blanchard

Center celebrates events, donations

The Blanchard Community Center, 685 Rusho Lane, will host the annual Doll and Teddy Bear Tea Saturday at 11 a.m.

Participants are asked to bring dolls, teddy bears, teapots, teacups and hats for “show and tell.” The tea will feature a display of dolls and teddy bears, plus an auction and light lunch.

Admission is $6.

Community center receives grant

After receiving a $6,500 grant from Blanchard Area Seniors, Inc., the Blanchard Community Center will be able to replace and update kitchen sinks, counters and cabinets at the Center.

The Florence Wasmer Arts and Culture Fund of Inland Northwest Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Blanchard Community Center for its Arts and Culture program development.

The program includes art classes, quilting workshops, two theatrical performances, a summer drama kids camp plus art activities for kids and family movie nights.
