Simon sparks CV past University
Central Valley pitcher Scott Simon drove in David Borgman with a sacrifice fly and went the distance for a 10-inning 5-4 road victory over previously unbeaten University in a Thursday GSL baseball showdown between district rivals.
The game featured five doubles, five home runs and 21 strikeouts.
Three of the home runs, by Billy Moon in the first inning and by Thomas Wakem and Jon Rapose in the second, staked the Titans (8-1) to a 3-0 lead.
CV (7-1) rallied to tie as Dane Berg had a two-run double in the third.
The teams traded home runs in the seventh. Fano Pau’s blast in the top of the frame was countered by Craig Keeton in the bottom.
Borgman was 3 for 5 with two doubles and the game-tying RBI in the fifth. Moon struck out 14 in nine innings.
The teams meet again today at CV.
In other GSL games: Mt. Spokane’s Ryne Leonard pitched a shutout on the road, striking out nine, and the Wildcats (5-4) benefited from seven Ferris (5-4) errors in a 5-0 triumph. Leonard also had two of his team’s three hits.
Mead’s (6-1) eight-run fifth inning turned back visiting Lewis and Clark (3-6) 11-6. Kramer Kembel was 2 for 2 and drove in two runs during the six-hit inning.
East Valley (3-4) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 victory over Rogers (0-7). Richie Mehlbrech’s two-out bloop single down the right-field line followed a pair of walks and spoiled a two-hit, 19-strikeout effort by Rogers’ Jacob Partridge.
Visiting Gonzaga Prep (3-4) topped Shadle Park (3-5) 11-6 as Connor Roff had three hits and scored twice. The Bullpups scored five runs in the sixth to rally from a 6-4 deficit. Shadle had scored five in the first inning and outhit Gonzaga 13-11.
•Inland Empire League: Cole Tonnemacher had a two-run single during Sandpoint’s five-run third inning and the Bulldogs (4-5, 1-4) held on for a 6-5 victory over visiting Coeur d’Alene (7-6, 2-3).
Devon Austin was 3 for 3 and Jackson Seamon had two hits, including a triple and drove in two runs for the Vikings, who had a 10-7 advantage in hits.
