Contest open for water slide name
Some lucky Spokane Valley kid with a good imagination will get a little piece of immortality by naming the city’s new Park Road Pool water slide.
In case immortality isn’t enough, city officials will throw in 25 free swimming passes – good at any of three new municipal water playgrounds scheduled to open in June.
Not only will the winning moniker be slapped onto the slide for all time, the person who submits the name will get the inaugural run during an opening ceremony on June 19. That’s right, kids: Your back side could be the first to polish the pristine plastic of the “Anaconda’s Belly” or the “Gusher.”
Think carefully, though. Contestants get only one shot at the prize.
The competition is open to students of any Spokane Valley school district who are 18 or younger.
Entry forms are available at the city Parks and Recreation Department office at the CenterPlace Regional Event Center, 2426 N. Discovery Place, or by clicking on the “Name the Slide Contest” link on the city’s Web site: www.spokanevalley.org.

Spokane Valley
New fire truck bids much lower
A decision to seek new bids for a fire truck may save the Spokane Valley Fire Department more than $123,000.
The only response in last month’s first round of bidding was a budget-breaking $541,008 offer from Seagrave Fire Apparatus. Fire commissioners had budgeted $480,000, which was expected to cover the cost of equipping the truck.
This week, however, when the last of four new bids was opened, the apparent low bid, from KME Apparatus and Equipment, was $417,915.
The other bids were: General Fire Equipment, a Spokane company representing the Rosenbauer manufacturing firm, $455,180; Pierce Manufacturing, $491,812; and Seagrave Fire Apparatus, $522,327.
Chief Mike Thompson said the bids were still being analyzed late in the week, but all of them appeared to meet specifications. He planned to recommend a purchase at Monday’s fire commissioner meeting.
Delivery of the new truck could occur between fall and next spring.
