Cubs fans forever

Fans of the team that hasn’t won the World Series in 101 years now have a place where they can wait an eternity for a title, if necessary.

A red brick wall designed to resemble the one in dead center at Wrigley Field has been erected in a Chicago cemetery and is ready to accept the cremated remains of Cubs fans – inside $800 Cubbie blue and white urns if they wish.

Dedicated a few days ago, the wall with its stained-glass scoreboard has what Fans Forever president Dennis Mascari likes to call “skyboxes” to accommodate 288 “season-ticket holders.”

“You can bring your family out here, you can have a game of catch,” said Mascari, who envisions the 32-foot-long wall at Bohemian National Cemetery as a sort of eternal field of dreams. “You can sit here and feel like you’re at the ballpark.”

Prospect faces knife

Adam Miller, the top pitching prospect in the Cleveland Indians’ organization, will likely undergo career- threatening surgery on his right middle finger next week.

Miller, 24, was the 31st overall selection in the 2003 draft and quickly rose through the Indians’ minor league system as a starter.

He was 15-6 with a 2.75 ERA at Double-A Akron in 2006. Miller appeared in only 19 games at Triple-A Buffalo in 2007 because of soreness in the finger and was limited to six games at Buffalo last season.

Clearing the bases

Arizona ace Brandon Webb, the 2006 N.L. Cy Young Award winner, will be shut down for three weeks in a significant setback to his attempt to recover from shoulder problems that have sidelined him since his opening-day start. … Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer, sidelined by a balky lower back, went 2 for 4 with two RBIs during a rehabilitation assignment at Class A Fort Myers and remained on schedule to return to the Twins on Friday. … The New York Yankees placed right-hander Chien-Ming Wang on the 15-day disabled list and recalled David Robertson from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees said Wang has weakness in the abductor muscles in his hips that could be related to the right foot injury that sidelined him last year. … Philadelphia pitcher Cole Hamels is feeling fine a day after being hit in the left shoulder by a line drive, and expects to make his next start as scheduled.
