Turn deodorant holders into twist-up cards
Donna’s Day
It’s like magic. Twist this gizmo a few times, and your own creative greeting appears from an unlikely source — the inside of a recycled deodorant container! You can create any kind of all-occasion card to surprise your friends — or even one for Mom on Mother’s Day!
It’s a unique “go green” activity to enjoy with your kids this spring.
Here’s the stuff you need for one greeting:
• 1 empty oval, twist-style plastic solid deodorant container with lid
• Colorful self-sticking paper
• Heavy construction paper or poster board
• Glue
• Craft supplies such as feathers, paint, glitter and googly eyes
Here’s the Fun:
When your deodorant container is empty, find out how it works. Let your child twist it around and around as she watches the elevating plastic base appear at the top of the container. Keep twisting, and eventually it will come off of the plastic screw that is inside. Wash the base piece and let dry. Set aside.
Cover the outside of the container with self-sticking paper. Now decide what design or character you would like to create with the container. Keep in mind that this greeting is like a pop-up card. The outside decoration will be a clue to what eventually will appear from the inside. For example, make an underwater scene on the outside. Make cutouts of fish and seaweed, and then glue them onto the self-sticking paper. Or, simply attach themed stickers. Attach tissue paper wings for a butterfly or craft feathers for a bird.
To make the pop-up feature, cut out a sheet of paper approximately 2 1/2 inches by 6 inches. Twist it around and glue the short ends together to form an oval-shaped cylinder. Decorate the cylinder with a sea creature in a jumping motion for the underwater scene. Or, simply write a message on it with a play on words, such as “You Give Me Porpoise in Life.” If it’s a greeting to Mom for Mother’s Day, you might write, “World’s Best Mom!” For a birthday, “Happy bird-Day!”
Glue the bottom of the paper cylinder to the outside rim of the elevating base. Let dry. Carefully replace the base onto the inside screw and twist it into the container. Replace the cap. It’s ready to surprise and bring a smile to someone special.
