Groups gathering school supplies

SPOKANE COUNTY – The girls and boys at Camp Fire USA will be collecting school supplies in the Kids Helping Kids Back-to-School Supply Drive Aug. 15 and 16 and they are reaching out to the community for help.

The Camp Fire kids and other volunteers will be collecting school supply donations at Office Depot, 1003 E. Third Ave.; Rosauers stores on the South Hill, in Spokane Valley and on Division Street; and Ben Franklin in Cheney.

The Salvation Army also is collecting school supplies for area children in need.

Through Aug. 31, community members can drop off supplies at The Salvation Army Family Resource Center, 204 E. Indiana Ave., or the administration office, 222 E. Indiana Ave. Items may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and until 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Collection bins also are located at ShopKo, Fred Meyer, Rite Aid and Dollar Stores in Spokane.

Families needing help may pick up donated school supplies on Aug. 24 and 25, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Community Center, 222 E. Indiana Ave. Adult identification and proof of each child in the home, such as a Social Security card, a medical coupon, or school identification card, will be required.

The school supply distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spokane Park Board meets today

MANITO – The Spokane Park Board will hold a meeting today in the Manito Park Garden Center Meeting Room, in Manito Park, 4 W. 21st Ave., at 7 a.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss Mobius Science Center contract and it will be open to the public.

St. Francis lecture Aug. 14 at GU

LOGAN – The Secular Franciscan Order, the St. Francis Fraternity of Spokane, will present “St. Francis of Assisi: Instrument of Peace” on Aug. 14 at the Wolfe Auditorium in the Jepson School of Business at Gonzaga University, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The lecture will feature Brother William Short, OFM.

The event is free and open to the public.

Goodguys Nationals return

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Goodguys eighth annual Great Northwest Nationals will be held at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., Spokane Valley, Aug. 14 through 16. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 and 15 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16.

The vintage vehicle event includes commercial and vendor exhibits, used auto parts swap meet and cars-for-sale area, model car show and arts and crafts.

Tickets are $15 per person, children age 7 to 12 are $6, and children age 6 and younger are free.

Shadle splash pads open every day

SHADLE – The Shadle Park Splash Pad, 2005 W. Wellesley Ave., is now open.

From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week, visitors can cool off in just one of many of Spokane’s city-wide pools.

Other splash pads locations include: Audubon Park, 3405 N. Milton Ave.; Chief Garry Park, 2515 E Sinto Ave.; Coeur d’Alene Park, 2195 W. Seconnd Ave. ; Franklin Park, 302 W. Queen Ave.; Friendship Park, 631 E. Greta Ave.; Glass Park, 627 E. Heroy Ave.; Manito Park, 1702 S. Grand Blvd.; Mission Park, 1208 E. Mission Ave.; Harmon Park, 6018 N. Regal St.; Nevada Park, 3933 E. Courtland St.; Pacific Park, 5211 W. Lowell Ave.; Thornton Murphy Park, 3105 E. 27th Ave.; and Underhill Park, 2910 E. Hartson Ave.

The following city-wide aquatic centers also are open: A.M. Cannon Pool, 1900 W. Mission Ave.; Liberty Pool, 1300 E. Fifth Ave.; and Comstock Pool, 800 W. 29th Ave. Witter Pool, 1400 E. Mission Ave., and Hillyard Pool, 5718 N. Haven St. have not opened yet.
