Three things we’ll be talking about this week

1The 8th annual Goodguys Great Northwest Nationals car show opens Friday at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. It features hot rods, custom, classic and muscle cars and street machines through 1972. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event Web site is www.greatnorthwestnats.com.

2Yeah, we think it’s too early, too. But that’s not stopping the NFL from starting preseason play this week. This year’s Super Bowl teams, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers, square off Thursday in a nationally televised game on ESPN. The Seahawks, meanwhile, head to San Diego for a game on Saturday.

3In Indio, Calif., opening statements are expected to begin today in the mental competency trial for Joseph Duncan. Prosecutors say Duncan killed 10-year-old Anthony Martinez. Duncan already was sentenced to death and multiple life terms in connection with an attack on a North Idaho family in 2005.
