Undecided Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo on Sunday said the fate of coach Lovie Smith has not yet been decided. Before the game against the Ravens, Angelo shot down a report from Comcast SportsNet-Chicago on Friday that cited unamed sources saying Smith would return for the next to last year of his contract in 2010. A review of Smith will be conducted after the Bears finish the season against Minnesota and Detroit. Angelo said the $11 million remaining on Smith’s contract will have no impact on decisions the team makes.

Commented Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun said a new multiyear contract with the school is “right on the horizon,” but no deal has been reached. Calhoun denied a report by ESPN.com, which said Saturday he had agreed to a five-year contract. Calhoun, who has two national titles and took the Huskies to the Final Four last season, is making $1.6 million in 2009-10, the final year of a six-year deal. Women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, who has brought six national championships to Storrs, signed a five-year, $8 million deal in June. Calhoun was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

Suspended Iowa starting guard Anthony Tucker has been suspended after Iowa City Police said he was arrested for public intoxication. Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said the 20-year-old Tucker, the team’s second-leading scorer with 11.9 points per game, would be suspended indefinitely. Officials at the Johnson County Jail said Tucker pleaded not guilty to one count of public intoxication and was released on $325 bond. The sophomore pleaded guilty to public intoxication in December 2008. In January, Tucker was ruled academically ineligible to play.

Declared Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren has declared for the NFL draft. Warren told the Associated Press he believes it’s the right time to take his game to the next level. The junior from Long Beach, Calif., had asked the NFL Draft Advisory Board to project when he would be selected if chose to go pro. Warren’s four interceptions led the Wolverines in 2009, when no other player on the lackluster defense had more than two. Grounded The Montreal Canadiens were forced to spend an extra night on Long Island because of a storm that dumped more than 2 feet of snow. After their 3-0 victory over the Islanders on Saturday night, the club waited an hour on its charter plane before the flight was postponed until 4 p.m. Canadiens spokesman Dominick Saillant said the team arrived in Atlanta early for today’s game against the Thrashers.
