Mattress store gets cushy new all-in-one location

Sigh. I missed offering gift ideas for Christmas. My deadlines are so early that as I write this just before Christmas, it won’t be published until just before New Year’s. So I’ll write some ideas for the New Year.

One thing we always say “later” about is a new mattress. Well, the new Mattress Land store in Northern Lights Mall (Highway 95 at Haycraft) is now there for you. Opening this past week and moving from its previous location at 501 W. Appleway, this place has everything in, well, mattresses. The new store (where a golf store was previously) is bigger by 1,000 square feet, and the storeroom is now in the same complex instead of in Spokane.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 10 to 6 Saturdays and Sundays. Call (208) 676-1766. Visit www.sleepfit.com.

And now for your feet

That ingrown toenail been bothering you? Just how far into the skin do you clip that baby?

The Hayden Family Foot & Ankle Clinic at 1397 W. Hayden Ave. (on the north side between Highway 95 and Ramsey Road) has the answer and the treatment. Opening the clinic this fall, Dr. Joel Hix offers treatments and surgeries for any foot-related ailment. He has hospital privileges at Kootenai Medical Center and Northwest Specialty Hospital.

Originally from Sandwich, Ill., he was educated at Ricks College (now BYU Idaho) and in Des Moines, Iowa, and Pittsburgh. He came to the Inland Northwest for a one-year contract in a Spokane clinic. Hix also offers help for dermatological problems and foot ailments related to diabetes and obesity.

“We have an educational, personal approach,” he said.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and by appointment. Call (208) 762-0909. Visit www.hffaac.com.

Ah, this place has gifts

Now to spend the surprise bucks you got for Christmas.

Home accents, furniture and flowers, silks, gift baskets and balloons for celebrations are the specialties of Floral Design & Home Decor, now open at 6680 Government Way.

Located in 1,200 square feet formerly occupied by the As Seen on TV store and Rally Time Sports (which has moved to the back of the complex), owner Angela Austin has combined her former Floral Design store of Post Falls with home decor and furniture and seasonal items from consignments. She also offers floral wire services and local deliveries. She is originally from Kellogg.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and varying on Saturdays. Call (208) 773-3555.

This week’s tidbits

•The 2006 Boushey Vineyard Syrah was ranked 73rd among Washington’s Top 100 Wine Picks by the Seattle Times. It’s produced by Coeur d’Alene Cellars’ winery from its vineyard near Grandview, Wash.

•We geezers and biddies remember when gas used to be cheaper in Post Falls. But the past few years it’s been about a dime a gallon cheaper in Spokane. Hey, I remember in 1971 when it was 25 cents a gallon. I also remember when a candy bar and soft drink were a nickel, a pack of cigarettes was 35 cents (don’t tell my dad), and you got three songs for a quarter at Brock’s Fountain in Thompson Falls, Mont.

•Hey! Stop dropping your wrecked cars off in the middle of the night at Coeur d’Alene Auto Recycling on Thomas Lane. It’s been closed for months, and your county tax dollars pay to haul the heaps away.

•Happy New Year, everyone!
